The MQM, for all practical purposes, is a local and ethnic political party that has representation in the assemblies only from the urban centres of Sindh. However, the media attention it gets is out of proportion to its political standing in the country.

For example, the MQM has no representation in the assemblies of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but keeps issuing statement after statement about carving out new provinces from within these provinces. All the while it is not ready at all to allow delimitations in Karachi, which is quite contrary to its stand over other provinces and is against the orders of the Supreme Court.
