"He said that buyers were free to do whatever they desired with the girl. He also said that the girl had just attained puberty and would be delivered only after her period ended in three to four," said Dr Mathai.

MUMBAI: A woman in Mumbra has been arrested for trying to sell her 13-year-old daughter's virginity for Rs 1 lakh. The woman was apprehended on Sunday after social workers got wind of the horrendous offer and set a trap for her along with Thane Crime Branch officials.

It all started when one of the social workers was in an auto in Mumbra on Thursday. The auto driver, unaware that he was speaking to a social worker, told him he knew about a girl whose virginity was on sale, and said he could help him get to her. Stunned, the social worker initially decided to reprimand the driver, but quickly realised this would be of little help and instead decided to lay a trap for the culprits. The same day, the social worker got in touch with Harmony Foundation, headed by Dr Abraham Mathai, who said that the girl needed to be rescued and her sellers punished. On Friday, the social worker, who had noted the auto's registration number, contacted the driver and asked about the girl. The driver told him that the girl lived in a building in Mumbra and at first said she would cost Rs 3 lakh for the night.

"He said that buyers were free to do whatever they desired with the girl. He also said that the girl had just attained puberty and would be delivered only after her period ended in three to four," said Dr Mathai.

To ensure that the girl was not sold to someone else, the social worker kept in touch with the auto driver, who showed him a photograph of the girl, and even agreed to reduce the price to Rs 1 lakh. On Sunday morning, the driver called to say that the girl's periods had stopped and that he could take her after paying the amount.

By this time, Dr Mathai had sought help from Deven Bharti, inspector general of police, Maharashtra, who has the state's law and order portfolio. Bharti in turn alerted Milind Bharambhe, additional commissioner of police, Thane, and a team of crime branch officers was constituted to deal with the case.

On Sunday afternoon, the social worker and a colleague met the auto driver in the Kausa area of Mumbra. They paid a token of Rs 10,000 and were led straight to Fatima Palace, a six-storey building. There, the driver introduced them to Farida Shaikh, who claimed to be the girl's mother. It was decided that the two men could take the girl away and drop her back the next day. Just as the mother demanded the remaining Rs 90,000, one of the social workers called in the crime branch officers, who had been hiding a short distace away.

The cops quickly arrested the mother and the auto driver, identified as Mehboob Ismail Mulla. They also took the 13-year-old girl in for questioning. Crime branch officials revealed that the woman was married and that her husband ran a small workshop in Andheri. They have five children -three daughters and two sons. While the 13-year-old girl is the eldest, their youngest child is barely six months old.

"The girl is in shock and not talking much. We do not want to add to her trauma. She will be sent to a home where she will open up with the help of counsellors. The mother has confessed that she was trying her daughter's virginity. We are not sure yet if her husband even knew about it," said Madan Ballal, senior inspector with the Thane Crime Branch. At the time of going to press, the police were filing an FIR under the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Dr Mathai told Mirror this was a rare case that was detected in time. "There are thousands of such minors who are forced to become mere objects for perverts. We have to ensure that this lot is removed from society."

My god ...these are signs of a sick society and something needs to be done urgently to remove this perversion from society and save women who have to bear the brunt of these excesses. Whats even more depressing is when pious relationships of a mother, father, uncle or so are involved in such heinious crimes. It is absolutely nauseating.

In any case Pakistan is ready to provide psychological help and also to offer the girl a place to stay safe in a cordial environment should it be requested.

Our message is of Love as always and our hope is that such menace is dealt with swiftly. :)

"As soon as they are identified, they will be suspended from service and a vigilance enquiry will follow. On the basis of vigilance inquiry a regular departmental enquiry would be conducted," Neeraj Kumar had said.

In a shocking incident, a Punjab Police constable sodomised the eight-year-old son of a migrant labourer at his Mohalla Gaddaipur house here on Friday.

The victim's father, Arjun Pandey, said he, along with his family, returned here from his native village around a fortnight ago. "On Thursday, we rented a one-room accommodation in the house owned by constable Sanjeev Kumar, who had also rented out more rooms in the same building to other labourers," he said.

Kumar lured Pandey's son, who was alone at home, to come to his room by offering him biscuits. The victim had come to the city in pursuit of education and was to get admission in Class 2.
"My innocent son was not aware of the ill designs of Kumar. He was brutally sodomised by the cop, who was in an inebriated condition. My son managed to flee from the room while bleeding profusely," Pandey alleged.
While fleeing from the place, the boy met his uncle, Tej Bhan, on the road. His parents were informed. The boy was taken to division No 8 police station, where the cops did not register the case saying the crime spot did not fall under their jurisdiction. The family was told to go to Maqsudan police station, where the cops asked them to take the boy to the civil hospital.
The constable fled from the scene after the crime.

The 30-year-old survivor with her family members was taking the dead body of a relative for cremation from Ranchi to Garhwa. They were accosted by a gang of dacoits on the Latehar Garhwa National Highway 75.
Police sources said that the woman tried to resist the dacoits when they asked her to get out of the vehicle. "They took the woman aside and took turns to rape her," sub-divisonal police officer (Latehar) Alok Kumar said.
The family members could not do anything as the dacoits were armed. Two of the survivor's sisters were also present in the vehicle.

Terming acts of sexual violence against women a "national problem" in India, the UN human rights chief has asked the government to strengthen its legal regime against rape, but opposed the demand of death penalty for rapists.

Navi Pillay, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, in her detailed reaction on the brutal gangrape of the 23-year-old student in the Capital, who later died in a Singapore hospital, said attacks were taking place against women of all social classes in India.
"This is a national problem, affecting women of all classes and castes, and will require national solutions," she said.

Pillay welcomed the anti-rape protests, saying this will help women in overcoming fear in the New Year. She said the Indian government has taken some steps towards ensuring women safety, but much more stronger moves are required.
"Now is the time to strengthen India's legal regime against rape. I encourage the government to consult widely with civil society…..Urgent and rational debate on comprehensive measures to address such crimes are required," said the UN human rights chief.
Pillay asked the government to invite the “UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women to visit the country to assist it in this process,” since these rapporteurs are independent experts and are trained to investigate on such issues.
She, however, opposed the growing clamour of death penalty. “However, terrible the crime, the death penalty is not the answer, Pillay said, cautioning against such an extreme response.
