An explosion at a famous Mexico fireworks market killed at least nine and injured dozens of others as waves of blasts sent fire and smoke into the air.
The federal police said that preliminary counts showed 70 people were injured after chaos erupted at the open-air San Pablito Market in Tultepec, north of Mexico City, Tuesday afternoon.
Videos shared on social media showed rapid explosions rising high into the air as volcano-like plumes of smoke washed over the city.

Mexican police and firefighters had responded to the scene, hosing down hotspots still smoldering.

National Civil Protection Coordinator Luis Felipe Puente said some nearby homes were also damaged, but asked people not to approach a scene that may still be dangerous.

The same market was the sight of a 2005 fire that leveled stalls ahead of Mexico's Septemeber Independence Day, with another fire a year later.
Holidays such as Christmas and New Year's are often celebrated in Mexico with fireworks.
