Mitchell Johnson bowled one of the more curious deliveries seen in Test cricket when he released the ball from behind the umpire late on day three of the third Test at Edgbaston.
Johnson had troubles on the previous two balls, spraying one down leg side before bowling a wide, which Ian Healy referred to as a left-handed Harmy in reference to former English pace bowler Steven Harmisons woes during the 2006/2007 Ashes series.
The Edgbaston crowd has enjoyed any chance to get on top of Johnson throughout this match and they immediately pounced on this opportunity.
As Johnson approached the crease next ball the crowd delivered a cacophony of noise only for the fast bowler to pull up before delivering, drawing a smile from batsman Joe Root and Johnson, as well as the ire of the England fans.
I reckon hes done that deliberately, Mitchell Johnson. The crowd are right into this said commentator Mark Taylor.
Johnson then charged in again only to deliver the ball from almost two metres behind the popping crease, prompting a leave and a grin from Root.
The commentators could be heard giggling in the background as Healy asked Long ball, real long ball. Was that a yip?
Its not legal to bowl behind the umpire but he does get up level with him. Its a 24 yarder said Healy as Taylor laughed hysterically.
Unfortunately for the Australians that innovation couldnt help their cause as Ian Bell and Joe Root guided England to an 8 wicket victory.
