According to historian and author James

Neill: “The love between the first Islamic Ruler in the Indian sub-continent, Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni and his slave Malik Ayaz was such that it became an Islamic legend.

Malik Ayaz, son of Aymaq Abun-Najm, was a Georgian slave who found himself the rank of officer and general in the army of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni. Malik Ayaz’s relationship with Mahmud inspired many cultural ballads, poems, and stories. Mahmud of Ghazni’s love for his slave Ayaz has been penned down by many in history. It is said that the two both slaves for each other. Mahmud later raised Ayaz to unprecedented standards and made him the King of Lahore.

As per a popular Islamic folk legend, the following events record the deep relationship of Mahmud of Ghazni and Ayaz

Mahmud to Ayaz: “Who is the most powerful ruler in the world?

Ayaz replied: “I am the most powerful

Mahmud said: “Why you and why not me?

Ayaz replied: “You, Mahmud, are the most powerful of all kings, But since I rule your heart, I am more powerful still.

As per another incident mentioned in ‘Bustan’ by great Persian poet Sadi:

Someone said: “Ayaz, his favorite slave possesses no beauty. It is strange that a nightingale should love a rose that has neither color nor perfume.

Mahmud of Ghazni replied: “My love, O sir, is for virtue, not for form or stature“.

Ek hi saff mein kharay hogaye Mahmud o Ayaz,
Na koi banda raha na koi banda nawaz!

This particular shayr now portrays more meaning than ever.

feels more of love between Nawaz and Modi

O Man do not destroy this thread with petty politics

As you seems interested, let me ask you !

Gaznavi was not interested in beauty or stature then what kind of virtue in Ayaz attracted Gaznavi ?

Remember Ayaz was a white European with big hight and may be something big too!

Guess what is that !

Are you serious?

Mehmood Gaznavi was also not sure that he was really a son of his father!

To prove he is really the son of his father he used the same tactic as most Molvies use...

He created a story of a dream ...that Prophet PBUH came to my dream and called me O Son of Subgteen!

You need to read history of Farishta, Farista was very pro Gaznavi ..the story is there in his book!

We do not have any evidence of any historical event... We comment on ancient history by reading ancient books documenting those events!
Allama Iqbal has a totally different opinion, he said:
Aik hi saf main khray hogaay Mhamud o Ayaz
Na raha koee banda na koee banda nawaz

Platonic!

If Gaznavi was such a person then why that platonic love was not with other slaves... Gaznavi got lacs of slaves!

Remember the stories mentiond in main thread post also reflects on the traditions of Islamic society of that part of the world that loving a beautiful slave boy was acceptable!

May be Iqbal was just satirically describing their relation in this Shair !

Apny Mehboob or dear friend ky Sath Aik saaf mein khary hona is not a big deal

May be Iqbal was saying both humiliated themselves and lost their manhood!

Remember at one point Iqbal was an Indian nationalist. Here is what he said about Indian civilization

Younan o Misro Roma Sab Mit Gae Jahan Se

Qaim Magar hai Ab Tak Namo Nishan Hamara

Kuch baat hai ky Hasti Mitti Nahi hamari

Sadion raha hai dushmun dory zama hamara

Even Iqbal wrote poems about Ram,Krishan and the famous poem Sary Jahan se acha Hindustan Hamara

Why are you so obsessed about them being in to a gay relationship? Are you finding a way to come out for yourself? Would it be more appropriate for you to give a historical perspective?

No way, not hurting me but if you want to come out of the closet then do it without any inconvenience to the history.

He is our national hero ...we must respect his choices in present day Pakistan

For me being a gay is not a bad thing so I have no problem of coming out but I do not need to because I love Cleopatra!
