A bridegroom (29) in full wedding attire with a sehra and surrounded by family jumped into the Sidhwan Canal near Dugri Bridge here on Friday a few hours before the marriage.
Mohit Gulati of Jammu Colony in Shivpuri was on his way to a marriage palace near Arora cinema house when, according to his father, Kewal Krishan, he complained to his maternal uncle of uneasiness because of the heat. “The baraat had left for the venue around 11am. Mohit was to get there on a horse but he had refused to ride it,” said Krishan.
“My son asked his uncle and brother-in-law to take him to some open place near the canal. They watched in shock as he stepped out of the car, removed his sehra and wedding suit, and all of a sudden jumped into the canal,” said the bereaved father. He was overseeing arrangements at the marriage palace when he received the news on telephone.
The groom’s family called the Model Town police, who deployed divers to locate Mohit. Around 5pm, they found his body. Police have started inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The bride’s family also reached the police station but filed no statement.
Mohit’s match with a Harkrishan Nagar girl was arranged two months ago.
Friends stunned
Mohit’s family has said he was a happy-go-lucky person, and it was hard to believe that he could take this extreme step. Mohit’s friends claimed he was happy about his wedding and making all the arrangements by himself.
