Eminent Nuclear Physicist Pervez Hoodbhoy on the main factor causing the Muslim and Arab world to lag behind
everyone else.
"Forty-six Muslim countries contributed 1.17% of the world's science literature, whereas 1.66% came from India
alone and 1.48% from Spain. Twenty Arab countries contributed 0.55%, compared with 0.89% by Israel alone.
The US NSF records that of the 28 lowest producers of scientific articles in 2003, half belong to the OIC (made up
of 57 Muslim countries).
No OIC university made the top-500 "Academic Ranking of World Universities" compiled by Shanghai Jiao Tong
University... At Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, where I teach... the campus has three mosques with a fourth
one planned, but no bookstore.
We must learn to drop the pursuit of narrow nationalist and religious agendas, both in the West and among
Muslims... Just as important, the practice of religion must be a matter of choice for the individual, not enforced by
the state. This leaves secular humanism, based on common sense and the principles of logic and reason, as our
only reasonable choice for governance and progress. Being scientists, we understand this easily. The task is to
persuade those who do not.""
Prevez Hoodbhoy "Science and The Islamic World - Quest for Rapprochement"
Total Peer reviewed science papers by 1.6 billion Muslims are less than that of Harvard University. 24% of World
population (Muslims) have 3 Nobel Science Prizes and those two also when working in the west. Jews (now
mostly atheists) a mere 15 million or 0.2% of world population have 85 Science Nobel Prizes.
