KPK: Explosives defused in Peshawar, Charsadda

PESHAWAR: Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) personnel on Monday defused a half-kilogram explosive device in Peshawar’s Hayatabad area.

Station House Officer (SHO) Riaz Ali Shah said the homemade bomb was planted in an empty plot along the road near the Hayatabad police station, DawnNews reported. Upon receiving information about the bomb, security forces summoned BDS personnel to the area who successfully defused the explosive.

Another bomb was defused near a police check post in KP’s Charsadda district today. The BDS defused the three kilogram explosive near the check post in the limits of the Saro Kalley police station in Charsadda’s town of Shabqadar.

SHO Saro Kalley police station Gul Shaid Khan said the pressure cooker bomb was planted on the Yaka Ghund Road which was defused once the police received information.

Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Charsadda lie close to Pakistan's troubled northwestern tribal region where troops have been locked for years in deadly battles with insurgents.

The cities have seen frequent attacks by militants in the past few years, with targets ranging from civilians to policemen and other law enforcement personnel.

KPK govt to promote cultural activities

PESHAWAR - The ruling parties particularly Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Jamate-Islami (JI) have formally agreed to allow cultural activities at Nishtar Hall, the city's only auditorium, for promoting cultural activities, sources said on Sunday.

The PTI is fully interested to make Nishtar Hall a hub of cultural activities and musical shows to revive cultural activities in the province. However, its coalition partner JI is willing to allow using Nishtar Hall only for Pakhtuns' cultural programmes, not for modeling and musical shows, they said.
In this regard, both the parties held several meetings and have finally decided to permit cultural activities at Nishtar Hall.

Shut down by the MMA government for all kinds of cultural programmes, the ANP-PPP coalition government reopened Nishtar Hall after five years for cultural, literary activities, music, performing arts and holding exhibitions.

It was generally presumed that the JI, a partner in the then MMA government, might pressurize the PTI-led government to close down Nishtar Hall for another five years, as it was the JI that had opposed cultural activities in the hall.

In Peshawar, Nishtar Hall is the sole large entertainment place having capacity of accommodating around 600 people.

The sources said that the KPK Culture Department would soon release a schedule, while a code of conduct in line with the religion and local traditions would be followed.

They said that the provincial government has decided to resume cultural activities at the hall to provide entertainment programmes to the general masses.

But only clean and neat programmes would be allowed at the hall, mostly the hall would be used for promoting Pakhtun cultural programs, they concluded.

Thats a very good move by both the parties but this would mean extremely tight security of Nishtar hall. I remember, I had appeared for NUST test in that hall :)
