PESHAWAR, 27 July: The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has decided to introduce Circular Train System for Peshawar, Nowshera and Mardan as well as establish 16 industrial zones in the province, revealed Chairman Economic Zone Ghulam Dastagir on Wednesday.


Talking to media in Peshawar, Ghulam Dastagir said that a Chinese delegation would soon visit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to assess the train project and feasibility of Circular Train System would be conducted in September this year.


He maintained the proposed train service would be faster than orange train and it would travel at a speed of 220km per hour.


Ghulam Dastagir said that around 0.2 million jobs would be created in two years with the establishment of 16 economic zones in the province. He said that work on two economic zones on Chakdara Interchange and in Chitral would begin soon.


The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) would train 30,000 youth for working in the economic zones, he said.


Dastagir added that industrial sector has been ignored in past. He said that the province needed 800MW electricity for industrial zones which would be provided to industries by establishing hydro power houses in next two years.


A meeting was held here with Chief Minister Pervez Khattak which decided to pursue the Chinese investment for circular train in Peshawar and establishment of KP Insurance Company and KP Holding Company.


The purpose of the meeting was to review special initiative and fast track execution of projects especially economic zones, industrialisation, infrastructure, development, social sector.


The meeting was held in the CM Secretariat on Monday. Senator Mohsin Aziz, Ghulam Dastagir Khan, Chairman KP EZDMC Special Economic Zone, Mohsin M Syed Chief Executive KP EZDMC, Chief Secretary Amjad Ali Khan, administrative secretaries and other officials concerned attended the meeting.


KP Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has said that his government has the capacity to lead the province towards sustained economic growth.


This province has surplus natural gas that is being planned for diversion to power generation as his government wanted to make KP economically viable unit of the federation where there are multi-faceted avenues of employment, growth, industrialisation and economic development.


The CM said that we have a lot of avenues for hydel power generation and at the same time we have extra natural gas which his government decided to divert to industrial sector to boost industrialisation in the province.


Initially his government identified Karak, Kohat and Rashkai for industrialisation and the natural gas would be used for the purpose. We will generate power from natural gas to run industrial units in the province.


He said that we are quick learner of our past interaction with WAPDA and therefore we rationalised our approach to reduce dependence on WAPDA because WAPDA is reluctant to give us our share of electricity. He asked the concern officials to invite bidding for the purpose.

Commenting on industrialisation process in the province he said that there will be a one window operation that will track the province on fast track progress and economic development. Rest assured we have the capacity to lead the province towards sustain economic growth.



The chief minister directed the participants to pull their sleeves and show results as he hates efforts that do not give results for the public welfare. He has been working on this project for the last three years and now he wanted this to be on ground.


He expressed the hoped that the public servants would use their best efforts and put on ground the planned execution of project that were people friendly and that will benefit the whole province.


The CM said that the interest of the province should be kept supreme and it should be visible for the fast track development of the province. We have already identified direction of development of the province and we have to work on it to get it accomplished.

With the growing population and rise in standard of living of people the road traffic has also increased manifold and roads congestion during peak hours is on the rising. Realizing need of the day KP-BOIT has envisaged a circular rail project from Nasirpur at one end to Hayatabad on the other, which is under our active consideration and study. This project is based on using the existing railway track already laid to connect Landi Kotal (border city with Afghanistan) with rest of the country. This Shuttle service will be running only during the day time and every train from each side will leave at the interval of around 15 minutes and is expected to reach the other end (15 km) in 40-45 minutes and will accommodate 400-500 passengers per trip. It will not only provide a descent and safe travel but will also be much faster than the alternate means of travelling.

Pre-feasibility and technical study of the project is in progress. The project will be implemented on Public / Private Partnership basis wherein the Provincial Government will arrange for infra structure, the investors will be called in for investment in the rolling stock and operating the train etc. while Pakistan Railway will be responsible for Maintenance, Safety & Monitoring the operations.

I doubt if this project will ever roll.

i have the same feeling. this isn't the first time that the kp govt tried to start a mass transit project. last time they failed in 2013 because the fed govt denied them access to the unused land of the railway, eventhough the land had not been used since the inception of pakistan in 1947. but this time something does feel different. i hope i'm wrong. maybe they do succeed
