Saraiki is an ancient language which dates back to at least 5000 years and perhaps even more than that. Punjabi is not a language. No history book mentions of any language called Punjabi.

3500 years ago the language of Northern India was Sanskrit..
The evolved Language in later period is called Appa Barashma
Then it was Parakrit
Then Handvi
Then evolved Hindi, Urdu, Sindhi, Punjabi, Gujrati, Marathi, Nepali and Bengali
The ancient written record of the language evolved in Punjab and Hazara (kpk) are Baba Farids Ashloks preserved in Sikh holy book of GUru Garath Sahib Je. In later period Sikhs developed this language.
Because Most of the speakers of this language were living in the region of Punjab so language came to Known as Punjbai.
Punjabi has different dialects like Doobi, Jatki, Majhi, Podri, Malvi, jangli, Multani, cholistani, Pothohari,Hindko etc
As it were Sikhs who gave prominence to this language so the language of Baba Guru Nanak the Majhi dialect was later became standard form of Punjabi. The present Punjabi is basically Majhi dialect.
Saraiki, Hindko and Punjabi are Political issues
The name of this language in Baba Farid Ashlooks is Hindvi
U can also declare Punjabi a dialect of Hindi...

dont go in a bad debate. bahawalpur region was the center of ancient hind and there was a time wen hakara culture ruled like super power. sariki is the sweetest language. punjabi is also an ancient language though i dont hav much information but i think it is started from sikh religion,,well it would better to consult a historian like dr mubarak ali for right details.
