Key Taliban commander arrested from Karachi

Asmat Ullah Mehsud was planning to attack CID officers and had also facilitated other terror attacks, sources said.

KARACHI: Police have arrested the key commander of Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) Asmat Ullah Mehsud during a raid in the SITE area of Karachi.

Sources said that Mehsud was planning attacks on CID officers with his group.

The arrested commander was involved in providing financial support to the TTP campaign and was providing safe hideouts and medical treatment to injured militants in the city, sources added.

Mehsud, who is the brother of Commander Abdul Wahab Mehsud, had also facilitated militants involved in the Karsaz incident and the failed terror attack on the Kimari oil terminal.

The government had announced a Rs.10 million bounty on Abdul Wahab Mehsud.DawnNews

Man accused of attack on BBs rally

KARACHI: A suspect, believed to be involved in the attack on Benazir Bhuttos rally at Karzsaz, was arrested on Monday from a house in Manghopir during a raid conducted by the Anti Terrorism Cell and the Criminal Investigation Department.

SSP CID Umar Shahid said that they had raided the house, where Azmatullah was hiding, on a tip-off and seized one pistol and two rounds of bullets from his possession.

Azmatullahs brother, Abdul Wahab, was accused of attacking Benazirs caravan on October 18, 2007, in which around 175 people were killed. Officials revealed that as his brothers right-hand man, Azmatullah could be involved in 2007s attack. SSP further said that two months ago his brother Ismail was also arrested from Ettihad Town, Karachi. According to him Azmatullah along with other accomplices was planning to attack the CID office, in Karachi. We have recorded his telephonic conversation with his brother, who directed him to attack me and DSP Haji Nadeem, he said.

Extremists exploit Karachi killings

LAHORE: Mutahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader and the Federal Minister Dr Farooq Sattar said that the extremists are exploiting the situation created after the target killings in Karachi.

While talking to the journalists on Wednesday Sattar suggested that the target killings can be avoided by acting upon those proposals which were presented in the last year’s high level meeting.

‘We will have to get Karachi rid of the nexus of the land mafia and the extremists.’

He further added that people are electing those candidates again who hold fake degrees. People should bring alternate leadership in front.

Key TTP commander nabbed in Karachi

A top Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) commander has been arrested from the Baldia Town locality here.

The commander, who has been identified as Zafar Hussain, hails from Swat, and is said to have carried out various terror attacks across the country in the recent past.

According to reports, acting on an intelligence tip-off, police officials raided a house in Baldia Town and apprehended Zafar.

Police also recovered a pistol from Zafar, The Daily Times reports.

Baldia Town police has registered a case against him and took him to an undisclosed location for further interrogation. (ANI)
