Russia was a small state(Moscovy Rus i.e. Grand Principality of Moscow) in Middle Ages.It was a vassal state of the Golden Horde(Tatars). Tsarist Russia became an imperial power and started expanding towsrds north,south and east.Muslim lands were colonised and became part of Russian empire.
