Washington (AFP) - US-led coalition forces said they carried out a series of 16 airstrikes Saturday on the Islamic State in its Syrian stronghold of Raqa, in one of the biggest assaults on the extremists.

"The significant airstrikes tonight were executed to deny Daesh (IS) the ability to move military capabilities throughout Syria and into Iraq," spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Gilleran said in a coalition statement.
"This was one of the largest deliberate engagements we have conducted to date in Syria and it will have debilitating effects on Daesh's ability to move from Raqa."


Coalition forces "successfully engaged multiple targets" throughout Raqa -- the extremists' de facto capital -- the statement said, destroying IS structures and transit routes.
The strikes "have severely constricted terrorist freedom of movement," it added.
The announcement came after the self-proclaimed Islamic State group released a video showing teenage members executing 25 Syrian soldiers in an amphitheater in the ancient ruins of Palmyra.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights meanwhile reported heavy clashes in several parts of western Aleppo.

ISIS executed 25 in Palmyra

Atlanta (CNN) A just-released video from ISIS shows militants executing 25 captives in the ruins of a Roman amphitheater in the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra.


The graphic video begins with images of the Quran, followed by gruesome scenes showing what appears to be the aftermath of fighting, with bodies in the street. Then it shows captives, heads down and dressed in dark fatigues, as they are herded single-file onto the stage of an ancient arena. A row of young men, many appearing to be in their teens, stands behind the prisoners while an older man reads a document to the assembled crowd.
Periodically, the video shows men seated on the crumbling stone seats. Some are waving ISIS flags, but others appear distressed, hiding their faces and even crying.
When the cue is given, the young militants shoot the assembled captives all at once. The scene includes an editing trick which runs the film in reverse, making the deceased appear to rise and get shot again.

US Soldiers showed restraint in Kabul confrontation

KABUL, Afghanistan A military investigation into a violent confrontation between Afghan residents of this capital city and United States soldiers last week has concluded that the troops acted with admirable restraint even after an American soldier was stabbed, a military official said.

The investigation examined the tense moments after a Taliban bomb ripped through a heavily armored convoy of American troops traveling down a busy street in Kabul. As the American soldiers, who were unharmed, got out of their trucks to form a cordon, they were confronted with a scene of devastation. A mix of passing motorists and shopkeepers had taken the brunt of the blast. At least one Afghan was killed and nearly two dozen were wounded.


What happened next was confusing and violent. Witnesses to the scene, interviewed by reporters, said Afghans began to throw stones at the soldiers and shout Death to Americans. An American soldier opened fire, with some witnesses reporting that the shots were clearly aimed away from the crowd, and intended as a warning. But others accused the soldiers of firing into the crowd. At one point, an Afghan man stabbed a soldier. The scene calmed only when Afghan security forces took control, witnesses said.
The investigation by an 11-person board of NATO officials concluded that it was extremely unlikely that American troops had shot any Afghans during the episode, said Brig. Gen. Wilson A. Shoffner of the United States Army. General Shoffner, the top military spokesman for the American-led mission in Afghanistan, said the review had concluded that one American soldier had fired two warning shots from his rifle into the side of an unoccupied and obviously damaged civilian vehicle parked on the side of the road in order to warn off the crowd.
By that time, General Shoffner said, the crowd of agitated civilians had been throwing rocks, debris and even chunks of metal at the troops. The warning shots prompted the crowd to back up. General Shoffner said the investigation found that the shots were fired at a downward angle into the empty vehicle and there was no reasonable way that the rounds could have caused any injury to anyone.
The investigation also found that the troops had acted with admirable restraint after an Afghan man had stabbed one of them. The soldiers wound, to his right arm, was not serious, and witnesses said the assailant was arrested by Afghan security forces. One witness, Khesraw, 33, said that after the stabbing, a nearby soldier had simply pushed away the man with the knife. I was really amazed to see how patiently the American soldier acted, Khesraw said.
General Shoffner said that American soldiers fired only two warning shots during the entire episode. But he noted that Afghan security officials on the scene also fired. It was not clear whether those were warning shots or struck members of the crowd. I believe those were warning shots, General Shoffner said, but added that from looking at the video, you can tell they were firing shots. But you cant tell really anything beyond that.
General Shoffner declined to identify the source of the video, but the military uses cameras affixed to dirigibles about a quarter-mile in the sky.
