TEHRAN: Iran has announced to donate $10 million and 65 tons of food and medicines for the flood-affected population of Pakistan.
The announcement was made in a meeting between Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Interior Minister Rehman Malik in Tehran on Monday, says a press release. During the meeting, Rehman Malik delivered a message of President Asif Ali Zardari to the Iranian president. Both discussed the security issues of the region and bilateral issues.
Rehman Malik briefed the Iranian president about the latest floods hitting various parts of the country. Ahmadinejad also directed his Interior Minister Mustafa Muhammed Najjar to immediately visit Pakistan to assess the needs of relief items in flood-hit areas so that sufficient quantity of food may be dispatched to those areas.
He said Iran gives due importance to its ties with Pakistan and would never leave it alone in this hour of distress when floods have hit the country badly. Rehman Malik also met with his Iranian counterpart and Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki and discussed matters of mutual interest.
