Hayatabad Medical Complex: New bio-safety lab to provide advanced TB diagnostics
PESHAWAR: Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Health Shaukat Ali Yousafzai laid the foundation stone for a state-of-the-art Bio Safety Level-III laboratory as well as a regional blood centre (RBC) at Hayatabad Medical Complex on Monday.
Both initiatives are being supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the German Development Bank (KFW). The blood centre will add to nine other blood centres to meet the needs of six major state-run hospitals. The bio-safety lab will be an advanced diagnostic facility for TB patients in the province where a wide range of tests, including drug susceptibility testing (DST) among others, will be performed.
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government believes in adopting innovative means and methods to effectively control diseases in the province by utilising advanced scientific methods. Controlling TB is one of those efforts, which is a priority for our government, said Yousafzai.
People will have access to a standardised safe blood transfusion system once the lab is constructed, which is expected to be completed by mid-2014.
Health Secretary Dr Fakhar-e-Alam stressed on the need for advanced scientific solutions to meet the emerging challenges of TB.
Dr Stefan Oswald, the division head for Afghanistan and Pakistan at BMZ, reaffirmed the commitment of the German government to improve healthcare services and quality of lives in Pakistan, particularly K-P. Oswald appreciated the efforts of the K-P health department and hoped Germanys support will improve healthcare in
the province

Rooting out corruption: PDMA suspends four more officials accused of misappropriation
PESHAWAR: Four more officials of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) were suspended on Monday for embezzling Ramazan food packages meant for internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in Jalozai Camp.
According to a press release issued by the PDMA, the camp coordinator, sub-camp in-charge, a storekeeper and a security guard were suspended after an inquiry found them to be involved in misappropriation. A PDMA official said the inquiry was conducted under the supervision of PDMA Director General Atif Rehman.
The United Arab Emirates government sends Ramazan food packages for IDPs at the Jalozai Camp every year, however, eight officials in the camp were found involved in embezzling these packages, said the official. IDPs had also protested several times against the accused. Following this, the PDMA decided to conduct an inquiry and take action against the culprits.
Earlier in August, Coordinator of IDPs Faiz Muhammad, Information Technology Manager Rajindar Hari Lal, Finance Manager Muhammad Waqar and a finance assistant were suspended by the authority and an inquiry was ordered against four others.
PDMA DG Atif Rehman had said strict action will be taken against those involved in corruption. The PDMA was established for the welfare of displaced people and we will provide every facility to them.
