Indian Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has shown usual stubbornness once again and said the water of Indian rivers will only be given to Indian farmers, the one that flows towards Pakistan will be stopped.
He was addressing a public gathering in Punjabs city Jalandhar ahead of assembly polls in which Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are in an alliance. This alliance has been ruling the state for last ten years, but this time Modis BJP is facing tough challenge in the form of Aam Aadmi Party and Congress, the arch-rival.
Sensing a threat to his 10-year regime, Modi decided to play another political card. As Punjab is mainly associated with agriculture, the Indian PM tried to take the farmers of Punjab into confidence to save his government.
The Indian Prime Minister said, The farmers of Punjab need not worry about water anymore. We have decided to route the water from the Indus, which currently flows into Pakistan, who do not have the right over this, to the farmers of Punjab, who rightfully deserve it.
