Opening Wounds
The calendar for fidayeen strikes in India has often followed that of bilateral talks between India and Pakistan. So, there is every possibility that the terror attack in Gurdaspur had as its motive the killing of whatever is left of the Ufa spirit. Blood, spilt copiously on Indian soil, has unerringly grounded the talks process. Hence, in spite of the shock and anger at the mindless killing of 11 people in Gurdaspur, India should refrain from following its set pattern of behaviour.
Nothing would serve the objective of the fidayeens' handlers better. That objective, quite clearly, is to drive back the talks to the freezer. Not merely that, if the increasing violence in the Jammu sector and now the Gurdaspur attack are any indication, that objective also includes inflicting a thousand cuts on India. Gurdaspur may have been an unintended target for the fidayeens who were, in all probability, hoping to strike Amarnath pilgrims, but for those who wish to see India sink into mayhem, it is a fortuitous one. If Punjab goes up in flames again, India would be significantly weakened on its western sector. There is no doubt that the plan is being acted upon.
The Gurdaspur attack may not have any connection with the revival of the Khalistan agitation, as Punjab's politicians concur, but the wiring up of a railway track in the area shows that those intending to create trouble in the sector have help at hand. There are also intelligence reports indicating restiveness among Indians, both in India and abroad, committed to the Khalistan cause and their dalliance with troublemakers beyond the border. Not surprising then that the Blue Star anniversary this year has seen an unusual flurry of activities.
All this means that India is standing at a bridgehead. If its intelligence and security units act concertedly, its politicians act selflessly and its people remain united, there may be hope. If they do not, India will be harmed more than a thousand times.
