We Indians are in urgent need of potty training

Prime Minister Narendra Modis ambitious Swachh Bharat project has apparently failed to get off the ground, quite literally as well as metaphorically.

Not long ago there were reports that a number of villagers in UP were breaking down their sarkar-provided toilets because they thought that having a loo within the house was unhygienic and they preferred the traditional and more sanitary practice of fielding.

Now comes news that on a long-distance Air India flight, all eight toilets on board the aircraft got clogged and became unusable because passengers, largely Indians, put wads of paper, sanitary napkins, plastic bottles and sundry rubbish into the WCs choking the vacuum flush system.

The incident which made international headlines is a regular occurrence on airlines patronised by Indians, particularly Air India. Clogged aeroplane toilets which not only cause acute physical and mental discomfiture to passengers but also impose a financial burden on airlines because of delayed and cancelled flights are a major problem in the aviation industry.

While part of the reason why this happens is that many Indian air travellers are unfamiliar with toilets and their proper usage, even Indians flying first class who presumably are better acquainted with such mod cons are apparently just as much to blame for the situation.

It would appear that a majority of Indians irrespective of social and educational background consider lavatories as places where dirty jobs have to be performed, and as such can be used as messily as one feels like, with little or no consideration for those who later must use the same facilities.

While most Indians are scrupulously clean about their persons bathing at least once a day, or more during the hot weather their lavatorial habits leave much to be desired, as the Air India episode shows.

Swachh Bharat can become a reality only if before that we have a properly Potty-trained Bharat. Which by the look of things or the loo of things is going to be a really tall order.
