NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday summoned the Iranian Ambassador to lodge a strong protest over the detention of its oil tanker over last 16 days and sought an "unconditional" release of the vessel.

Foreign secretary Sujatha Singh summoned Iranian ambassador Gholamreza Ansari to lodge the protest and demanded early release of the tanker detained by Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) since August 12.

The tanker was seized in Persian Gulf while carrying crude from Basrah in Iraq and was taken to Bandar Abbas port.

"Foreign secretary has conveyed government's strong concern at the continued detention of our ship in Port Bandar Abbas and Government of India's expectation that the ship would be released at an early date and that crew members would be treated with all due consideration and courtesy in keeping with international norms. Officials of both sides will make another effort to resolve this issue amicably," spokesperson in the ministry of external affairs said.

He also noted that it was for the second time since MV Desh Shanti was detained by Iranian authorities, India had called the Iranian Ambassador. The last such meeting took place on August 16, he said.

India was constantly engaging with Iran --both in Tehran and here, external affairs minister Salman Khurshid said while asserting that it was important that New Delhi does not concede any point and the ship has to be released "unconditionally".

Hoping that Iran will address the issue as two weeks "is really too long for something like this to happen", Khurshid said, "I am sure the decision has not been taken at the level of Central government of Iran."

Khurshid also said he was convinced that there was no scope for establishing any pollution caused by the ship. "We are little bit perplexed why this had happened and who has taken the decision."

Meanwhile, the Indian ambassador in Tehran travelled to Bandar Abbas and met the captain of the ship and the other embassy staff met the crew, official sources said.

Pakistan condemns this behaviour by India and urges it to respect the treaties it has signed to protect the environment (bigsmile). Iran's stance is justified and we stand with Iran in their principled approach to the matter (bigsmile)

India must at once upgrade its ships to ensure that their are no leaks and also pay the million dollar damage fee as per iranian law .

Some days back i posted this news and a certain indian member of the forum said that this is a non-issue and will be resolved shortly in a day or two (bigsmile). I had said at that point that this will be a big crack in Indian relations with Iran and now almost after a week the situation is getting ONLY worse (bigsmile)

Pakistan is ready to mediate between Iran and India if requested.

Our message of peace and love as always

Exactly, but see contrary to whats fair, your government is protesting, crying and moaning and demanding unconditional release of the ship after creating so much pollution in Iranian water and giving them so much trouble. . its just fair that they ask the damages to be paid.

that's why i am not in favour of unconditional release of tanker , with increasing power we ought to behave like a responsible nation , india should not avoid and refrain from the practices of rougue and irresponsible security states.

There is no leakage. It's mere frustration by Iranian govt after India started buying oil from Iraq.
There is nothing more India can do to help Iran. They are running a rogue govt which is anti west , responsible for putting their own regime into hard sanctions.

@ The worst, GOI should send a hard message to Iran. Iran should stop acting cry baby. They better act fast else they will be unable to sell 1 barrel of oil to India.

Delhi should know that if Iran did not give into USA threats there is no way they will accept Bharat's silly demands. Summon whoever you want, Iran will stand it's ground.

and they should also start to upgrade their sub standard transport and military ships, they should also stop whining and shouting foul to Pakistan when one of your own mistakenly/deliberately blow up your submarine. Infact they should come out of typical baniya mentality of chamrhi jae damrhi na jae and pay the dues for damaging the Iranian ocean. I praise Iranian patience for the childish behaviour of Indian government where they act completely like rogues, bullies and self declared super power who can dictate the neighbouring sovereign countries.

Earlier, the Bahraini daily Gulf Daily News, in its August 10 edition, quoted law firm Holman Fenwick Willan Middle East as saying that investigations conducted by the Shipping Corporation of India did not reveal any evidence of oil spill caused by Desh Shanti near the Iranian waters.
“SCI has investigated the matter fully and found no evidence whatsoever to support the allegation that any oil was spilled from Desh Shanti,” the firm said in a statement. “In particular, the vessel was not carrying any cargo at the time of the alleged incident, and she had sailed in ballast from her last port, where her tanks and lines were confirmed to be dry by an independent inspection agency.”
The firm asserted that that the ship had “received a telephonic enquiry from the UKMTO (UK Maritime Trade Operations) about possible oil spill on July 30, which resulted in an immediate check which determined that there was no leakage from the vessel.”
“The vessel,” it said, “was again inspected at her next port of call by an independent surveyor, which confirmed that there was no evidence of any spill.”
Media reports earlier implied that Tehran had detained the ship to signal its displeasure over New Delhi’s decision to cut crude imports following the imposition of unilateral western energy sanctions on Iran. Mr. Pourang said Iranian ports and maritime organisation were “observing the tanker.” Fars reported that the vessel was taken to the Khor Musa port in Iran’s Khuzestan province.
