NEW DELHI India has charged a diplomat who was posted at the Indian Embassy in Islamabad with spying.
Madhuri Gupta, an official in the press and information section of the embassy, is accused of passing information to Pakistani intelligence agencies.
The 53-year-old was recalled to New Delhi and arrested at her home in the Indian capital in late April.
Police spokesman Rajan Bhagat said Wednesday that Gupta had been charged under the Official Secrets Act, the country's anti-espionage law. If found guilty, she faces three to 14 years in prison.
India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence from Britain in 1947. Relations between the two South Asian rivals were further strained after the 2008 militant attack on Mumbai that killed 166 people.
