Prime Minister Imran Khan meets delegation from Facebook

Prime Minister Imran Khan met with a delegation from Facebook in Islamabad on Tuesday. The delegation and the prime minister had a candid discussion on how Facebook can help in the areas of good governance, education, cooperation to counter hate speech, and empowering small and medium sized businesses in Pakistan in the digital age.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has that social media has played a critical role in educating the masses about their rights and helped in mobilization of youth in politics. PM Khan said social media played an important role in getting people out to vote and had a huge role in his election win. Prime Minister Imran Khan said that we must do good governance through e-governance, resolve citizens’ problems and use social media to present a positive image of Pakistan.

The prime minister and Facebook's delegation discussed Facebook's safety tools that help to prevent exploitation of children online.

On the discussion table were also efforts to help counter fake news, and lift digital access and literacy across Pakistan, especially in rural areas. There was also discussion about how Facebook can help to empower small businesses to grow online and participate in the digital economy, especially in a country like Pakistan which has a strong entrepreneurial spirit and where more than 64% percent of the population is under the age of 30. He was encouraged by Facebook’s recent launch of its SheMeansBusiness program and its mission to empower women entrepreneurs across Pakistan.
Prime Minister Imran Khan was also informed how Facebook has created a new Blood Donations feature where people in Pakistan can sign up to become donors on Facebook and get notified when people, blood banks, and hospitals near them need blood. In Pakistan, there are over 1 million blood donors signed up and this number is growing.

Simon Milner and his team expressed their commitment to Pakistan, and outlined the product, policy and partnership teams at Facebook that are focused on Pakistan to help keep the community safe, support small businesses grow, and create meaningful social impact.
