Dear Jibran Naeem sb, as you have stated yourself, reference is fundamental point and that reference for deen of islam is quran for this era. The quran cannot be understood without a person having sense of making sense of things and sense of making sense of things cannot come unless a person observes things in real world carefully for trying to understand things. It is because to learn sense of making sense of things 100% depends upon real world realities. Only after learning sense of making sense with help of real world realities one can perfect one's skills about thinking about things logically and consistently. Unless one realises importance of logic and consistency any conclusion one draws from anything may not be true.

For example, in case of deen of islam our foundation is quran and it is foundation only because it is a book that contains all necessary information for us human beings about all we need to know to have a great life in this world and to have a best hereafter. For having a beautiful life in this world mankind need some worthy goals and guidelines and a program that helps them accomplish those goals. This is why coming together of humanity becomes of vital importance and that is not possible without a proper constitution and law for proper organisation and regulation of humanity and the information provided in the quran can fulfil that need perfectly if that is what mankind want. In other words the quran is a revelation from the creator and sustainer for the universe for the mankind as a book to live by faithfully. To live by the quran faithfully is impossible unless mankind first make proper sense of the book for themselves.

Now if people live by the quran then they become free of personality cults otherwise they do not. Living by the quran means thinking and doing things according to the properly worked out instructions when it comes to dealing with each other as human beings regarding things in the universe. All people are equally bound by rule of law of God. In other words no one is above the law therefore when none is above the law then there does not arise the thing called personality cult because each person does what he is assigned to do as his/her job or task or role in the scheme of things. When all do as they are told in order for the people to function properly as a proper human community then all things can work fine for each and every person as a part of a properly organised and regulated human community or ummah. For people who are interested in knowing things in detail they are explained HERE and HERE. People who have no sense of organisation and regulation therefore of importance of constitution and law or a program for goals and guidelines for any action plans are mainly people who live as cultists. They follow the leadership independent of the proper reference point explained above in a haphazard way. There is no logical consistency in their mindsets, attitudes and behaviours. It is because the leadership has no goals therefore needs no guidelines because there is nothing to achieve or accomplish so people of this sort live on moment to moment basis in confusion and chaos. Such people are slaves of anything and everything because they have no proper sense of proper purpose. They go with their whims wherever they take them. This happens because when there is no proper sense of proper goals then one creates one's own goals based upon one's own desires and ambitions whatever they may be because otherwise to carry on living becomes impossible for a human being. People need something to keep them going if not the truth then falsehood will do. This is why each and every person interprets one's life in that context in order to live one way or the other.

To put it simply, human beings are basically need driven because people are motivated by drives. If people have needs and they need to fulfil them then they must do so either as they should as guided or they will do any way they can. If people will fulfil their needs in an organised and regulated manner as a proper human community or an ummah or a brotherhood, things will be fine but if they will do as they please then chaos and confusion is bound to result.
