LAHORE: Stage actress Deedar put on a two-hour dance performance at the Government College Universitys (GCU) Bonfire Night on Tuesday, prompting anger among some quarters at the debasement of one of the citys most prestigious educational institutions.

The events organisers said there was nothing vulgar about Deedars performance and it was all for a good cause, the universitys Help the Helpless campaign through which poor students can get financial aid. The GCU Welfare Society raised Rs1.5 million at Tuesday nights event.

This was perhaps the first time that a theatre actress, a profession considered indecent by some, has officially performed at an event at a public university. She danced to several popular Pakistani and Indian songs including Sheela Ki Jawani and Munni Badnam Hui Darling Tere Liye.

Around 450 students bought Rs1,000 tickets for Bonfire Night. Men were instructed to wear a black suit, while women were required to wear a red dress and a rose. Couples were offered two tickets at the concessional rate of Rs1,800.

Other performers at the event included singers Shafqat Amanat Ali, Arif Lohar, Annie, Jassie and Amanat Ali Khan and bands Raga Boys and Call.
A BA student told The Express Tribune that he bought the ticket only to see Deedar. At a private theatre, I couldnt touch her or exchange smiles with her, he said. Thanks to GCU, my wish to dance with her has come true. He said that GCU Registrar Sahibzada Faisal Khurshid had asked Deedar to dance to the song Sheela Ki Jawani. The registrar was unavailable for comment.

Senior faculty members criticised Deedars performance, saying it was not worthy of an institution of GCUs standing. They noted that in previous years, the performers had been classical singers and regional dancers practiced in historic art forms. Their performances had cultural and educational value, they said. Deedars dance sends the wrong message across the world about the GCU. Half the audience was female students.

What will they have learnt from Deedars dance? asked one faculty member.
GCU Welfare Society adviser Dr Khalid Manzoor Butt, an assistant professor, argued that the event was healthy entertainment that was good for the students. He said that the registrar was present at the event and there had been no vulgarity or indecent behaviour. He said Deedar had danced fully-clothed.

He also pointed out that by attending the event, the students had helped raise millions of rupees for poor students who might not be able to afford an education otherwise.

Iqbal Z Ahmed, noted industrialist and president of the GCU Endowment Fund Executive Committee, inaugurated the event by lighting the bonfire. Punjab Education Minister and Old Ravian Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman, US Consul General Carmella Conroy and US Consulate Public Affairs Officer Jennifer Larson also attended Bonfire Night.

Our new generation don't need no grooming from Deedar
they are groomed enough already by other sources.
Besides, the event seems innocent and for a good cause.

No sir , be fair, The Allah's rule does not change .

The thing is men wear pants, western dress,. ladies wear Burqa?

Pakistanioun ka bhi dil he , un ko bhi zara khush ho lene do.

Islam ka matlab jabar nahi.

Believe me the muslims girls in western countries wear pants , and jeans, 1% wear scarf, in the schools and coeducation.

These r dress lot better than here in west, shalwar Qameez.

Qasir bhai ne lagta he , mout ka manzer mee marne ke baad kia ho go , parhi hae , taza taza

If you havent visited the Cities of Pakistan that have evolved under MODERNISM, then you would only see the similarities between the west.

And there is a major difference between kidds that have been groomed abroad and in Pakistan. And the kidds from ABROAD majorly.....score more points in Manners, religion (those interested), respect, etc.....

What is our role as a parent , gardean , .caretaker....to keep in touch with them .

Better not for criticize them , but to give company and suport .

The warm feelings of our parents and teacher's company will not let them go too far.

Same as our new born kid start learning , how to walk.

Holding the finger of father , father walk very slow , appreciating him at every step ,looking down at son by bending neck down...... for so many years.

And then he become happy that my son is walking now.

But our Mullah's says that a kid of one year should walk like Hazrat Muhammad used to walk at his 40s after nabooat.

Pakistanioun ka bhi dil he , un ko bhi zara khush ho lene do.
Believe me the muslims girls in western countries wear pants , and jeans, 1% wear scarf, in the schools and coeducation. Does this means we promote same in Pakistan too?
These r dress lot better than here in west, shalwar Qameez. A Shalwar Qameez violating Islamic dress code is not better than a Pant/Skirt which respect the given code.

This age of teen is the most emotional age in our life. and a person wants to do lots of things, and he got the stature of full man but mind is matured.

So they need more attention.

What is the problem of our teachers that they dont participate these functions. specially the the professors of Islamic study.

Lots of people will be angry that this haram in Islam , why they should accompany them here? Gunnah Azeem !!!!

But think If teachers is sympathatic with students, and they just sit here , there presence will effect and students will not go too far , bad elements (they call Shatan) will be less active.

and the communication between them and students will be better and I am sure that studets will force him in the next occasion.

This student community is very passionate about realy nice teachers, they just kind of worship them.

Definitely professor could tell them at any meeting what is good or bad , ,,,that who generation r made.

Molvi meer hassan made Iqbal.

Honorable Molvi sahab used to teach in school and after school he use to give the company to the students.

He used to take them to Market , play ground , funeral, to tech the Islamic manners practically.

Thats why once Iqbal said to him, تیرا احسان بہت بھاری ہے
