ISLAMABAD: The government has decided to appoint Nasir Khan Durrani, PSP officer of BS-21, as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Inspector General of Police (IGP) with immediate effect, reliable source told The News.
The KP government requested the federal government to transfer the services of Nasir Khan Durrani to the province, the sources said and added that the request was accepted by the federal government and a summary with three names had been forwarded to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for the final approval, while the Punjab government agreed to surrender the services of the officer.
The sources in the Prime Minister Office (PMO) revealed that the premier was all set to approve posting of Nasir Khan Durrani as KP police chief.The sources also revealed that Secretary Establishment Division Shahid Aziz had forwarded a summary to the prime minister in this regard in which names of three BS-21 PSP officers had been recommended in the panel for posting as KP police chief.
The officers proposed by the Establishment Division include Nasir Khan Durrani, Nasim-ul-Zaman and Khalid Masood who is retiring after three months in January 2014 and Nasim-ul-Zaman, RPO Rawalpindi, is not only junior among the three officers but the government of Punjab has not also given willingness of his posting out of the Punjab.
Nasir Khan Durrani remained posted recently as Commandant of the Police College Sihala, and Additional IGP Special Branch, and known for professional competence and reforming the organisations. He is recently posted as Additional CTD in Punjab.
The sources also revealed that initially the Punjab chief minister was reluctant to relieve Nasir Khan Durrani for posting out of Punjab due to his performance and professional reputation and he wanted to retain him in Punjab police.
Many circles also tipped him as the favourite choice of Shahbaz Sharif for next Punjab police chief after retirement of incumbent Khan Beg. However, the government of Punjab has conveyed the willingness to spare the services of this reputed police officer for posting as KP IGP.
The sources disclosed that the decision to post Nasir Khan Durrani as IGP KP had been taken on the request of PTI chief Imran Khan in place of Ehsan Ghani, who was posted by the caretaker government during the general elections.
