Google chief suspects ulterior motive in Pakistan (Blocking site issue)

SAN FRANCISCO: Google chief executive Eric Schmidt on Friday said he suspects suppressing political criticism is a factor behind the move to block YouTube and Facebook in Pakistan.

Im always suspicious of these broad bans, Schmidt told a gathering at non-profit public policy institute New America Foundation, of which he is chairman of the board. In every case we looked at, there is an official reason then another reason. There is an awful lot of political criticism they are blocking at the same time. I am very suspicious here.

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) banned access to Facebook, YouTube and more than 450 links, including restricted access to Wikipedia.

A Facebook page that fueled rage and protest in Pakistan was gone from the popular online social networking service on Friday but the popular social networking service said it remained blocked in that country. The Facebook user that organized an Everyone Draw Mohammed Day competition to promote freedom of expression evidently took down the page along with a separate blog about the campaign.

Despite general anger over the caricatures, the ban on websites has sparked some criticism, particularly among the largely Western-educated elite living and working in the relatively moderate Lahore and Karachi.

more than 450 links

Guys I kind of agree with Google chief. There is something more to than the actual issue. As the article says, more than 450 links were blocked and a lot of the sites don't have anything to do with the actual issue but the politics. Youtube didn't do anything but they were blocked also. There are a lot of recent controversial fauzia wahab videos circuling on youtube.

Babar awan going to the court tomorrow. Something definately is up.

I was not expecting such a langauge against me that some of you used here.I am a logical person and I do support only logic and I am not a blind follower of anyone Even I had some disputes with some MQM member long before ( Maybe at that time some of you did not know what is MQM ). Mr. Schmidt is really very innocent who does not understand or does not want to understand that the Lahore High court took suo moto notice of this issue and ordered the federal govt. to do something about it leading to the ban and if freedom of speech is so important to google would they dare to talk about the long arm statute by a certain govt.?
What they do not like about it is the fact that we responded in a way which is very hard for them to raise halbaloo over and has caused them to suffer financial loss and some embarresment too. I believe that this is the way to go, no violent acts, no shouting and crying, only request politely and then act peacefully.
For all those who think this is a political issue please get your facts together and understand that this is a unifying factor, do not try to make it into something which it is not.
