[h=1]French consulate officer arrested for allegedly raping daughter[/h]French consulate personnel Pascal Mazurier, who has been accused of raping and torturing his three-year-old daughter has been arrested by the Bangalore police. He has been taken for a medical check up by police and will be produced in a magistrates court today.
Pascal was arrested after being initially allowed to go free after five days of questioning. As details of the case emerged there was immense pressure on the government to arrest Pascal. Activists in Bangalore held a protest outside the French Consulate on Monday in which 30 of them were detained by the police.
There was initially some confusion over whether or not Pascal enjoyed diplomatic immunity, but it transpired that Pascal held a service passport and not a diplomatic passport.
Earlier a senior ministry official from the Ministry of External Affairs told Firstpost that Mauzer most probably had a service passport. When asked if that would imply that Mazurier does not have diplomatic immunity, he said “That I can’t say. An official communication is awaited.”
Shortly after the French embassy released that information however, the Ministry of External Affairs issued a directive for his arrest.
The child’s mother Suja Jones, who is of Indian origin, reported the case to police with the help of a Bangalore-based NGO after her maid told her that her three-year-and-ten-month-old child was sexually abused.
The mother immediately took her child to a private hospital at Hebbal which confirmed the sexual assault. Mazurier has been booked in a case of rape under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code.
She had requested that her husband be restrained from leaving the country till legal proceedings were completed and that under no circumstance should he be allowed custody of their children, who are French nationals.
A lawyer for Jones, speaking to the media said however that the fact that the children were French nationals would have nothing to do with the investigation and prosecution of Mauzer.
