Kalabagh would be on Indus, we would need a separate dam on Chenab or a link canal between Chenab and Indus to diver the water of Chenab to storage facility of Kalabagh. This way additional water of Chenab could be sent via the link canal to be stored in Kalabagh.

Kindly see the maps of the rivers that Qalandari has shared. Indus joins with Jhelum, Chenab etc around Rahimyar Khan, Kashmore region, where as the entire flooding currently is in the vicinity of River Chenab.

How would a dam on Indus help with flooding on Chenab ?

Kalabagh dam should be made, but it wont have helped with the current flooding.

Very very good question Qalandri. I looked at the entire map of Chenab and found out that the flooding was immense as soon as Chenab enters Pakistani territory in the Sialkot, Sambrial area. Any link canal below this point would not stop in flooding of the Sialkot region.

So the only possible solution would be to create a dam on Chenab itself, preferably as soon as the river enters Pakistan

١- وفاق پاکستان نے جب بھی ڈیم بناے، ان پر چھوٹے صوبوں کو گارنٹی دی گئی کہ ڈیم سے صرف بجلی پیدا کی جایئگی، نہریں نکال کر ڈاؤن سٹریم پانی کو کم نہیں کیا جایئگا. مگر ہر ڈیم بننے کے بعد ان تمام وعدوں کو توڑ کر وہاں سے نہریں نکالی گئیں. نتیجہ کے طور پر اب چھوٹے صوبے صرف پہاڑی علاقوں کے ڈیم کے حق میں ہیں کہ جہاں سے نہریں نکا لنا ناممکن ہے. مثلا بھاشا ڈیم، اسکردو ڈیم . مگر ظاہر ہے کچھ لوگوں کو یہ غیر متنازعہ ڈیمز بنانے میں کوئی دلچسپی نہیں اور سوئی صرف کالا باغ ڈیم پر اٹکی ہوئی ہے، جہاں سے نہریں نکالی جا سکتی ہیں . اگر وفاق نے اپنے وعدوں کا پاس کیا ہوتا اور چھوٹے صوبوں کو ساتھ لیکر چلتے تو ظاہر ہے آج کوئی کالا باغ ڈیم کے خلاف نہ ہوتا

٢- تربیلا اور منگلا ڈیم کے متاثرین کا جو حشر ہماری حکومتوں نے کیا ہے، باقی سب لوگ اس سے عبرت پکڑتے ہیں. ڈیم کے اوپر مجوزہ جھیل کے متاثرہ علاقے کے لوگ(مثلا، نوشہرہ-کالا باغ) اسی بات سے ڈرتے ہیں. انہیں معلوم ہے کہ حکومت کی گارنٹی کا مطلب صفر ہے

اسلیے حکومت کوپہلے غیر متنازعہ ڈیمز بنانے چاہئیں . وہ تو بناے نہیں جاتے اور نہ ہی کوئی ادھار دینے پر آمادہ ہے اور چلے ہیں بھڑوں کے چھتے میں ہاتھ ڈالنے

Another reason for opposition to Kalabagh dam is the Punjabi Bureaucracy. An example of what they have done so far with smaller provinces is obvious from the example of Ghazi Barotha Dam.

Ghazi is a town in KPK 7 km downstream of Tarbela, whereas Barotha is a town in Punjab. Water from River Indus is taken out of Indus at Ghazi, however the power generation facility is established in Barotha town 63 km downstream in Punjab. One of the prime reasons for doing so was to not give Electricity royalties to KPK.

Now, if you will do things like these how would you have support for such national projects ?

My parents are from a village in Sambrial , not far from the banks of Chennab and we visit there very often.......Floods are nothing new in these parts......
But since now India has made Baglihar dam and we lost the case to india......in Indus water treaty we had control of chennab and india cannot control flow of water but i guess they were allowed to make dam called run of river with limited storage......So india made baglihar dam with quite some storage and we lost the case as judge gave india some storage capability and to control run of river to some extent....


Now we have very less water in summer but in moonson india release lot of water from dam and hence we have floods like that.......Damage is huge....Rice crop is cash crop of sialkot but there are huge losses....

baki jis mulk me aaj tak english ka dia canal system chal reha and ayub khan k bnae dam chal rehe han and nothing worth mentioning made after that......i am not hopeful that hum chennab pe aik b dam bna skte han....Alas but truth is India ne Chennab pe run of river pe bohat se dam bna liye and hum aajtak kalabagh pe larr rehe

Being on banks of chennab we have some of the most fertile land in Pakistan but government policies have resulted in people from sialkot leaving their lands and settling in other parts of country or abroad.....

It is sad that people who are supporting Kalabagh dam have no logical argument apart from calling the other side as traitor.

Purpose of any dam is to store water and these people forget that if there was a Kalabagh dam it would have some amount of water already in it and it won't be a dry dam purposefully built to cater for flood water. In case additional water is released from India or came into rivers because of heavy rains in the north it will still be in those rivers (Indus, Chenab, Jehlum or Ravi). So where the additional storage capacity to store water would come from?

Flooding has occurred in Balochistan with a huge dry land and we were unable to stop those people where a simple canal system diverting additional water to dry lands is needed.

مرالہ جو كہ سطح سمندر سے دو سو چھپن میٹر كی بلندی پرہے سے پانی بہر بنا كر اوپر كی طرف چڑھاتے ہوئے جہلم دریا كے نیچے سے گزارتے ہوئے سطح سمندر سے چار ہزار میٹر بلند شمال مغرب میں سكردو كے مقام پر دریائے سندھ میں ڈال دیا جائے ۔
