Nice post, very interesting.
Are you telling the world to not to believe the most authentic three universities of Pakistan i.e. KU, NED, and DOW because they issue degrees on political basis. Yaar meri job per laat tou na maro.
O Bhai! do opposition and love Zardari - the gaduate of all time, we don't stop you, but in doing so please do not shatter the credibility of these institutions of Pakistan (this poor country has left with very few assets in it and these schools are one of them). Just because of your statement, what if NASA dismiss a scientist who was graduated from NED? Will you take this responsibility?

Really, we are very unfortunate nation.

I think the person who is the most responsible for this after the fake degree holders himself is the returning officer of election commission who allow this to happen. We need independent election commission to bring change.

100 MPs’ degrees sent back for proper verification; Matric and intermediate certificates may be verified by boards

By Ansar Abbasi

ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has expressed its dissatisfaction over the authentication of degrees of almost 100 parliamentarians by the University of Sindh as the former found the latter not to have verified the degrees as per the HEC rules.

“We don’t say that all these ‘verified’ degrees are fake but the verification process adopted by the Sindh University is not satisfactory,” an official source in the HEC said, adding that these degrees are being returned to the university management so that these may be verified as per the rules and procedures adopted by the Commission.

The sources said that the Sindh University has merely verified the degrees that the university had issued to these 100 parliamentarians but did not reflect on the authenticity of these parliamentarians’ matriculation and intermediate certificates.

The Sindh University is now being told to follow the complete verification process and also comment on the standing of the matric and the intermediate certificates of these parliamentarians.

The HEC in a meeting on Thursday decided that if the Sindh University fails to do the complete verification as required by the Commission’s rules and procedures, it would seek through the Election Commission of Pakistan the copies of matric and intermediate certificates from all the 100 parliamentarians to get them verified from the concerned education boards.

“It may delay the process a little bit but we have to verify all these documents,” the source said. The Commission’s official made it clear that a set procedure is being followed for verification by all the universities and there is nothing special that the Commission is demanding from the Sindh University.

It is interesting to note that the Sindh University, whose controversial Vice Chancellor was in the centre of Viagra scandal that made headlines recently, has declared mere five degrees of parliamentarians as fake. None of these parliamentarians are from the Sindh Assembly, which otherwise has not yet seen any case of fake degree holder.

Those degrees declared as fake by the Sindh University include those belonging to Punjab Assembly member Zulfiqar Ali, who contacted The News on Thursday and insisted that his degree is genuine; Punjab MPA Muhammad Safdar Gill, another Punjab MPA Sardar Meer Badshah Khan Qaiserani and two MNAs Hayat Ullah Khan Tareen and Ghulam Dastagir Rajar.

The Commission sources said that the Sindh University has even cleared the member of the Sindh Assembly and a provincial minister, whose fake degree was recently published by a newspaper. It is apprehended that the Sindh administration that has already arrested brother of the HEC chairman apparently to desist him from the work of verification of parliamentarians’ degrees, is also pressuring the managements of some of the universities there to conceal the facts.

Regarding the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sindh Dr Nazir Moghul, who was appointed early this year, it was reported in the media that during his previous terms as VC of the same university, he had been getting the bills of Viagra tablets paid from the university budget in the name of his “medical treatment” in the US.

The media had claimed that a set of 30 Viagra tablets was purchased in the US when Dr Moghul had gone there in the name of “medical treatment” and claimed reimbursement of the bill when he returned to the university. The copy of the bill, paid by the university, confirmed that it was purchased from Rite Aid Pharmacy and Dr Singh Karpia had prescribed Dr Nazir Moghul the use of 100mg Viagra tablets. Dr Singh had written in his prescription that Dr Moghul was a “senior citizen”, so he should be given Viagra on demand. The total cost of the 30 Viagra tablets was $243.

The report claimed that despite several attempts for two consecutive days to get the version of Dr Moghul, he was not available. However, on behalf of Dr Moghul, Spokesman for the University of Sindh Majeed Panhwar, strongly defended Dr Moghul and completely rejected the allegations.

ISLAMABAD: The Chairman of the Higher Education Commission, Prof Javed Leghari, has sought a meeting with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani as threats and political pressure on the HEC and his own family has mounted to alarming proportions.

It has been confirmed that Leghari has written a letter to PM Gilani seeking an urgent meeting to discuss the entire issue of fake degrees and the job done by the HEC. In the backdrop of the arrest of his brother in Sindh and continuing threats from Sindh PPP leaders, Leghari has been compelled to seek help of the prime minister.

None other than the Chairman of National Assembly Standing Committee on Education, Abid Sher Ali, on Friday alleged that Sindh Home Minister Zulfikar Mirza was exerting all sorts of pressures on Dr Javed Leghari to stop him from verification of the parliamentarians degrees, though the Sindh government denies any involvement.

Talking to The News from London on telephone, Abid Sher Ali said that all these pressure tactics were being used to save the PPP government in Sindh from a possible collapse. He believed that if the verification of degrees by the Sindh University was done on merit, it may result into disqualification of dozens of members of the Sindh Assembly.

The Sindh Assemblys verification of almost 100 degrees has already been rejected by the Higher Education Commission, which seeks from the university to do complete verification of Matric and Intermediate certificates besides the graduation degrees issued by the university. The Sindh University verification was found faulty and not in line with the procedures adopted by the HEC.

Abid Sher Ali said that he had been told by reliable sources that HEC Chairman Dr Javed Leghari was also being threatened indirectly through his family members to quit the job and stop pursuing the issue of degrees verification. The chairmans family is getting messages like losing their lands in Sindh, possible difficulties for family members and finding Javed Legharis younger brother Farooq Leghari behind the bars for an indefinite period, the NA Committee on Education chairman said.

Abid Sher Ali said certain key postings and transfers had also been made in the Sindh University to secure the fake degree holders from being exposed. Abid Sher Ali, who like the HEC chairman is undeterred and determined to get all the degrees of parliamentarians verified, said that certain elements in the media were also trying to pressurise him to keep him away from the degrees verification work.

He said that generally the media was fully supportive of the cause of exposing fake degree holders sitting in parliament but without naming any journalist, he blamed some media men trying to create problems. He said that he was once advised by a media person recently in Islamabad to stop following the fake degree holders or I would have a bleak political future.

Abid Sher Ali said that his initiative to take up the issue of parliamentarians fake degrees in the NA Standing Committee on Education was fully appreciated by his party chief Mian Nawaz Sharif. Mian Sahib and the other top leadership of the party, including the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, are completely behind me in this crusade to clean parliament from fraudsters, he said.

Abid Sher Ali said that he would be back from London next week and resolved to continue pursuing the issue. This is our responsibility as politicians as well as parliamentarians to do such cleansing, so that politics should get the respect it deserves, the PML-N MNA said.

After the verification of parliamentarians degrees, he said, the Standing Committee would seek in the second and third phases the verification of all the heads and faculty members of private and public educational institutions, civil servants in BS-17 and above, doctors, engineers and even defence officers through the Defence Ministry.
