(CNN) -- An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 struck Wednesday morning in a remote area of southwestern Pakistan, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
The earthquake occurred at 1:23 a.m. (3:23 p.m. Tuesday ET) at a depth of 84 kilometers (52 miles). It was centered 45 kilometers (28 miles) west of Dalbandin; 255 kilometers (158 miles) west of Kalat; 310 kilometers (192 miles) east-southeast of Zahedan, Iran; and 1,020 kilometers (633 miles) west-southwest of Islamabad, Pakistan, the USGS said on its website.
USGS initially reported the quake at 7.4. Quakes of 7.0 to 7.9 are classified as major; anything over 8.0 is classified as great.
In Dubai, a reporter said he felt a moderate shaking that lasted for about 30 seconds.
Usman Zahid, a night manager at Serina Hotel in Quetta, Pakistan, felt the quake. He said it was "frightening" and estimated that it lasted about 20 seconds. It caused "broken glass in the kitchen" and caused the chandelier to swing, but caused no major damage, he said.
Twitter accounts in New Delhi, Jaipur and Dehradun -- all in India -- felt the quake. Twitter accounts in Bahrain said they felt the quake.
In Dubai, "I was just getting ready to go to bed," said Leone Lakhani in Dubai. She said she texted her friends in Abu Dhabi and Bahrain.
"It's not uncommon for this region to have earthquakes," said Kurt Frankel of the Georgia Institute of Technology. It is where two tectonic plates come together, he said.

Strong earthquake hits south-west Pakistan

A strong earthquake measuring 7.2 has hit south-western Pakistan, in a desert area bordering Iran and Afghanistan, the US Geological Survey says.
The quake struck at 0123 on Wednesday (2023 GMT on Tuesday), some 55 km (34 miles) west of Dalbandin in Pakistan, at a depth of 84km (52 miles).
It was located several hundred kilometres from the Pakistani city of Quetta and the city of Zahedan, Iran.
The 7.6-magnitude Kashmir earthquake of October 2005 killed 73,000 people.
In its initial reports the US Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake happened at a depth of just 10km (6.2 miles).
Earthquakes at such a shallow depth have the potential to cause major destruction and loss of life.
However, a later bulletin from the USGS revised the depth of the quake to 84km (52 miles) underground, potentially limiting the effects.
No immediate details of any damage were available, but reports said the quake was felt in neighbouring Pakistani provinces.
TV reports said the quake was felt as far away as Karachi and outside the quake zone in Dubai in the Gulf.
Frequent quakes
The area hit by the recent earthquake is sparsely populated and is located in a seismically active zone.
The nearest town, Dalbandin, 55km east of the epicentre, is thought to have a population of below 20,000 people.
However, major population centres are relatively close to the epicentre.
The Iranian city of Zahedan, some 310km (195 miles) west of the quake, is home to some 570,000 people.
The historic Iranian city of Bam, west of Zahedan, was devastated by an earthquake in 2003.
In Pakistan, the Balochistan provincial capital of Quetta is also home to 560,000 people.
The Pakistani province of Baluchistan is a focus of some militant activity, sharing a long and porous border with conflict zones in southern Afghanistan.
Pakistan is still dealing with the aftermath of devastating floods in the 2010 monsoon season, as well as battling Taliban militants in several tribal areas.
