There is a better world than what we constantly see in the media. But don't take my word for it go experience and share your knowledge with others. Along the way, though, one must believe in self, the communities and be willing to respect and learn from others even when differences of opinion occur.
Some of the finest men and women I've met, have inspired me by their deeds not words and, as a consequence, have moved me to learn more about their faith and culture.
Despite what we hear about so-called 'Islamic' extremism, my travels have taught me 1) this narrative is actually driven by extremist non-Muslims, who have no real knowledge of Islam (or no interest in sharing real Islam) and 2) the true followers of Islam are knowledge seekers, beautiful, peaceful souls who treat men and women equally, respect their elders, instruct their children to be good, productive people and who, ultimately, wish to peacefully coexist.
[The respected Khadija frequently comes to my mind as a tenacious, successful business woman who hired the Prophet (PBUH) due to his honesty in business dealings, and who would later propose marriage to him. I've learned in my studies of Islam, the Prophet had such great respect for Khadija, because she supported him when others rejected him; she provided for him when others deprived him.

My dear grandmothers used to say, "There's a bad apple in every bunch." True. Yet if we focus only on the bad, we won't fully enjoy the beauty of the rest.
