Chinese Embassy Response On Metro Bus Corruption Issue

KARACHI: Deputy Chief of Mission at Chinese Embassy in Pakistan, Lijian Zhao has confirmed Chinese Yabeite was not working in Pakistan.


In a tweet late Thursday, Lijian Zhao said, “This Chinese company Yabeite was not working in Pakistan. It made up some fake letters to cheat government and was punished.”

A private TV channel had alleged that Shahbaz Sharif had made billions from kickbacks from the Chinese company — Jiangsu Yabeite Technology Co. Ltd — in the Multan Metro Bus project.


Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif on Wednesday rejected the latest allegations levelled by a private channel, asking it to “put up or shut up”.


He said a legal notice had been sent to the private TV channel. “If the ARY [News] and those behind it want a duel, I am not afraid of such challenges but bring plausible and judicially admissible proof to back your allegations. I challenge you to prove your allegations regarding the Multan Metro Bus project within the next 48 hours, if you can. Either put up or shut up!” said Shahbaz.


Addressing a press conference during which he rejected the allegations regarding receiving kickbacks in the Multan metro bus project, the chief minister also lashed out at Imran Khan and asked him to submit evidence, saying he had been avoiding the court proceedings of the defamation case filed by him [Shahbaz].


Chinese authorities had initiated the probe after unusual transactions of money were detected in the company’s accounts. Pakistan came into focus only after the Chinese company informed the Beijing authorities that the money involved in its unusual transactions was actually the profits it had earned from the Multan Metro Bus project through its Pakistani partner company Capital Engineering and Construction Company Pvt Ltd.


Also, the facts ascertained by the investigation of The News reveal that the Chinese company being probed by Beijing had neither any role whatsoever in the Multan Metro Bus project nor any of its local partner was even registered in Pakistan.

Days after Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif denied any irregularities in the execution of Multan Metro Bus Project, a Chinese diplomat has clarified that the Chinese company allegedly involved in the ‘scam’ did not operate in Pakistan.

“This Chinese company Yabeite was not working in Pakistan. It made up some fake letters to cheat government and was punished,” Chinese Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Zhao Lijian tweeted.
“CPEC projects are transparent and clean. Zero tolerance for corruption. If there’s anything wrong, please report to embassy,” he added.
Shehbaz had said that that he had served legal notices to a private media channel and Senator Aitzaz Ahsan for levelling baseless allegations against his family.
The channel, according to the notice served, had reportedly aired a “concocted and fabricated story” based on the aforementioned claims, with Ahsan ratifying the claims made by the anchors.
Shehbaz had contended that the Punjab government had checked with the contractors engaged in the Multan Metro for their connections with the said companies, which were allegedly owned by the Sharif family. “There was no direct or indirect link between PML-N leaders and the company in question,” he maintained.
