I listened to a lecture a few years back by a specialist in 18th & 19th-century French literature. She said that because criticism of the Roman Catholic Church was forbidden in France its writers resorted to substituting "Jews" into their work instead. People soon understood that it wasn't really the Jews but the Church that was being criticized.

Oh you mean organizations like AIPAC and JDL have nothing to do with any of this. And that the narrative that criticism of Israel is equal to criticism of Jews and Judaism and is anti semitc ( which btw you also tow ) one day just came into existence out of the blue!
Maybe you are not old enough but before the 1st intifada and before the massacres in the camps, Israel was not as much of a holy cow, but when these troubles started Israel in order to curb criticism of crimes and bloodshed and its the more negative portrayal it was getting in the western press started this any criticism of Israel=anti semite campaign and to its credit has been very successful.

Thats because Israel concentrates all its efforts there, because thats where the money is and they are the world policy makers. What would Israel gain to sell this narrative in lets say Ghana.

You are free to criticize Israeli govt policies like we bash Indian govt policies towards Kashmiris or Chinese govt policies towards Uyghurs. However if you start attacking very existence of Jewish state of Israel, then it is Jew / Israeli hatred
