Obama to seek authorisation from Congress on Syria air strikes

There will be a debate and a vote "as soon as Congress comes back into session", Obama says.

He says he is "confident" that he has the authority to launch strikes without that authorisation, but says the decision will be stronger with it.

He says the US is primed to strike on Syria.

"The chairman of the joint chiefs has informed me that we are prepared to strike whenever we choose."

Obama says the chairman has informed him that the military is ready for his order. He says strikes "will be effective tomorrow, next week or one month from now".

Obama said that he believes that he has authority to attack Syria as Commander in-Chief but he will seek congressional vote on this matter. But question is what happens if Congress votes against the attack. Desertation by UK in the middle of the crisis was a real blow to Obama. He felt very lonely and very isolated today.

It appears that any US action in Syria will be delayed after Obama said he would wait for authorisation from Congress before launching air strikes. The president said he would wait for a debate and a vote on action in Syria, but said he will not call Congress back from recess early. That will seemingly postpone any action until 9 September at the earliest – the date Congress is due back in Washington.

They knew he had to go to Congress to get authorization...Make no mistake, Americans have spoken loud and clear, THEY DON'T WANT WW 3!.... It is smart politics by Obama. He is just keeping the pressure up on Assad. He want to get a legal support for future actions. ...this fight is not over!!! Going to Congress is ploy to dump (calm) the situation this time.

Realpolitik was also in play -- going solo without UK (but along with France) would have been the final epitaph on the demise of the British Empire; so the road has only become a bit more tortuous....

I don't see Assad becoming an Arab hero - he's hanging by the Russian/Iranian supports... but I rather posit that: (a.) the Round-1 of this duel has gone to Iran (on points), (b.) Russia has strongly reasserted itself back into the international stage, and (c.) Saudis and Israels now share increasingly common interests and there will be increased Saudi-Israel collaboration (secret) in the days/months to come, i.e. a new powerful regional superpower-bloc is born.

Arabs hate jews. I am talking about common Arabs not their Saudi rulers. Hero are born from love of common people. The block you are mentioning is unatural and fairly temporary.

I see these as two separate issues: (a.) yes, there's likely going to be an increased divide between the rulers and the ruled in these sheikhdoms and kingdoms for a host of reasons - which in itself becomes a ticking timebomb; and (b.) Assad has never had the standing of a popular Arab leader (his father still had some respect); he's already a much loathed person among ordinary Arab households for his oppression and ~100,000 civilians killed in the past 2 years; so I'm doubtful that he could cash this to become the voice of the Arabs -- the Saudis would never let that happen!
