The recent clashes on the LoC and the international border can be
attributed to Pakistan's frustration with India's adamancy on the revival
of the dialogue and India's effort to deflect U.S-British pressure for
resuming dialogue with Pakistan by showing that Pakistan continues to
pursue terrorist agenda against India and the clashes on the LoC relate to
Pakistan's attempts to induct its militant into Kashmir.
The latest incident on the LoC coincides with Robert Gates visit to New
Delhi and Islamabad. Instead of paying attention to his suggestion for
resuming the Indo-Pakistan dialogue the Indian government would like Gates
to pressure Pakistan to take firm action against India-oriented militant
groups, especially LeT or Jamatul Dawa. The latest attack, in my view is a
planned attempt by India to show that Pakistan-based terrorism is the main
cause of conflict between India and Pakistan. Instead of asking India to
resume the dialogue Gates should ask Pakistan to stop using the militant
groups against India.
Pakistan appears frustrated by India's refusal to resume the dialogue.
In Pakistani Punjab, the Islamic and the right of centre political groups
that adopt anti-U.S. posture also take anti-India position. They are
arguing that India has "stopped" river water to make Pakistan barren which
is a kind of aggression. This kind of sentiments runs into the army which
has strong roots in the Punjab. Therefore, the army/rangers have adopted
somewhat tough line towards India.

Fred,

Yes, this was reported in the open sources pre-deployment.

The problem with the FC is vetting as they are from the FATA and their
loyalties are not with the country of Pakistan first.

I have to prepare for a meeting now, but I will share with you later an
interesting experience I had with four bus loads of the FC during Ramadan
at the Islamabad Police Training facility where I went to meet with a
group of 75 SWAT cops and brief them on a PRS course I had to provide them
to cover the visiting heads of state for the Pak hosted
http://www.saarc-sec.org/ in January 2004.

Let's just say the first thing the SWAT Col told me as he escorted me to
his office was that "these guys work for the Taliban,"

It got more interesting after that.

LOL check this one out, seems LAL topi dream going down the drainPakistan paper traces al-Zawahiri's "steady" rise within Al-Qa'idah

Text of editorial headlined "Osama bin Laden's successor" published by
Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune website on 20 June

People who know Al-Qa'idah knew that Ayman al-Zawahiri will run
Al-Qa'idah because he has been running it all along. He is the man who,
by his own admission, wants to become the caliph of Pakistan, if not the
entire Muslim world. He has written a critique of Pakistan's current
constitution in his booklet Morning and the Lamp being circulated by the
madrasah [seminary] network in Pakistan as the next constitution of the
country.

Its true btw Zawahiri thinks Pakistan is central to his Global Islamic project.
He even mentioned it in his recent Sept 11 communication over the rules of Jihad AQ affiliates should follow.
(Intrestingly next to English and Arabic it was also released in Urdu)

I was going through them last night more of speculation btw diplomatic corp. than anything concrete, but one thing is for sure the virus is saturated in KPK, Karachi n PUNJab even among the Army ranks, PTI has taken a good step of forming intelligence units in police, another good step would be having direct talks with them. Another interesting thing is that the IEDS used in Afghanistan r supplied by a fertilizer factory in Multan, recipe for disaster considering IEDs r the most potent weapon to kill n can be used both ways (across the border and in Pak) as we saw the recent result in upper dir

Yes this is well know Fatima Fertilzer prodiuces the Ammonium Nitrate that is used in IED's.
(You just have to add DIesal and it becomes a powerful explosive)

Problem is its very good fertilizer with perfect PH , Nitrogen content for Pakistan soil.
American anit IED dept JIEDDO have talked to the company, even convinced them to increase price exponentially ( not good for our farmers but who cares) and add coloring agents to make tracking easier. These steps have not been very effective though.
