HMC gets state-of-the-art MRI machine
PESHAWAR: The Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC) in Peshawar has become the first public sector hospital in the country after getting a state-of-the-art Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine.
The machine has complete software package, including its capability of diagnosing full body such as cardiac imaging, brain spectroscopy and breast cancer with the best possible resolutions. It cost Rs. 220 million.
After the Aga Khan Hospital in Karachi, the HMC has become the second hospital in Pakistan that got this latest MRI machine. It has full software package with five years warranty. The machine is capable of diagnosing full body, including cardiac imaging, full brain spectroscopy and breast cancer with the best possible resolutions, Dr Mohammad Nawaz Khan, head of Radiology Department HMC, told The News.
He said since doctors in the peripheries had learnt that the latest MRI machine has been installed at the HMC, it has increased their workload as they were now receiving patients from all over the province.
The machine is being run in two shifts. It gives the best resolution in cardiac MRI and brain biopsy without any surgery, he added. The senior radiologist termed the best option for patients advised breast MRI by their physicians as it doesnt cause any radiation.
Previously the patients requiring cardiac MRI had to go to Karachi for the facility at the Aga Khan Hospital, where they charge one patient for Rs. 35,000. The HMC charge Rs. 6000. The machines higher resolution allows for better chances of diagnosing breast cancer.
In his view it enables them to better scan the content inside human body.Females below 30 years of age have more fats in their body which is seen as white spot with mammography machines. However, the more detailed imaging with the latest machine makes diagnosis easy, he opined.
Dr Mohammad Nawaz said they also received Rs. 30 million donation from the Refugee Affected and Hosting Areas (RAHA) programme for the Radiology Department. HMC Medical Director Dr Shahzad Akbar said that after MRI, HMC was set to receive a modern computerised tomography or CT scan machine.
With the new equipment, the hospital administration has updated all required services linked with MRI and CT scan machines.He said the RAHA funds enabled them to purchase a Digital Radiography (DR) X-Ray machine, two 500 milliaphere plain X-Ray machines, a Doppler Eleastrography ultra sound machine and a retrofit machine that converts plain 500ma X-ray scans into DR quality images.
