Islamabad: Majority of people have opposed the dual nationality bill proposed by Cabinet, which allows dual nationals to become member of Parliament, saach.tv poll reveals.
According to a poll conducted by saach.tv, 99% of Pakistanis have opposed the bill saying that government should not allow people with more than one countrys citizenship to participate in elections.
The federal cabinet has already approved amendment bill pertaining to dual nationality but due to their allys reservations Government decided to defer bringing it before the National Assembly.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) strongly opposed the bill, saying that they stand by constitution even though some of its members also fall in the category of dual nationals.
The Awami National Party (ANP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Functional (PML-F) chief Pir Pagara, allies of PPP, have also refused to support the constitutional amendment to lift a ban on dual nationals from taking part in elections.
Defending the dual nationality bill, the Government said that the bill was not meant to benefit few individuals, it was tabled for all those Pakistanis who live abroad.
The Supreme Court had earlier suspended the memberships of Senator Rehman Malik, PML-N MNA Muhammad Jamil Malik, PPP MPA Dr Amna Buttar, MNA Zahid Iqbal, MNA Farah Naz Ispahani, MPA Muhammad Akhlaq, MPA Dr Ahmad Ali Shah, MQMs MNA Farhat Mahmood and MPA Nadia Gabol for holding dual nationalities.
