MUMBAI: The number of Indians getting investment linked EB-5 visas in the US, also known as “cash for green card”, has risen nearly four-fold in the past two years. According to statistics issued by the US Department of State, 585 such conditional green cards were issued to Indians during the 12-month period ending September 2018, as against 174 in fiscal 2017. Compared with the allotment of just 149 conditional green cards during fiscal 2016, this reflects a massive increase of 293% over a two-year period. In terms of number of visas granted, India toppled South Korea and Taiwan to take the third spot behind China and Vietnam in fiscal 2018 3/21/2019 300% jump in 2 years in Indians 'buying' green card -

Over the past few years, hundreds of Indians, including those already working in the US have been lining up to apply for EB-5, an investment linked visa. The wait has borne fruit, going by the huge jump in numbers. Read also: US opens premium processing of H-1B+ 3/21/2019 300% jump in 2 years in Indians 'buying' green card -

The EB-5 program requires an investment of $1 million and creation of at least 10 jobs. This limit drops to $500,000 for investments in certain targeted employment areas. Investments via regional centres that pool in money for various projects, especially in the real estate sector, are more popular than setting up one’s own operations. After holding a conditional green card for 21 months, an investor can apply for permanent residence, subject to fulfillment of conditions.

Children of several H-1B workers, especially those who are in the queue for a green card under the employment category, are also ageing out. Post 21 years, they can no longer hold the dependent H-4 visa, but need to migrate to another visa (say student visa) or self-deport to India,” says Wexler.

Given the backlog which Indian investors could face in the near future under EB-5, investments must be planned in advance to protect the child’s interest,” he adds. TOI has reported earlier that even rich families based in India tend to gift the investment sum to a child studying in the US. After completion of studies, the EB-5 visa enables him or her to work without having to throw the hat in an H-1B lottery. Only 10,000 EB-5 visas are issued annually, with a 7% per country cap.

If a country doesn’t meet the cap, the unused visa quota is redistributed to other countries. Currently, Chinese and Vietnamese investors are facing a retrogression (which arises when 3/21/2019 300% jump in 2 years in Indians 'buying' green card - Times of India https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com...4-fold-in-2-yrs/articleshowprint/68504961.cms 4/4 the applications exceed the cap set) and the waiting time for Chinese is nearly 14 years.

The current waiting period for Indians, to obtain a conditional green card after making an investment ranges roughly between 18 and 30 months, depending on how fast the application (526 petition) is approved. Indian investors too could face retrogression from July or August this year, which would increase the waiting time further by a few years. This will still be significantly shorter than the wait time for standard employment-based green card applications where the waiting time is upward of 17-plus years. The US Department of State has also released figures of pending applications, as of September 30, 2018. The maximum pending applications were from China at 8,180, followed by 1,633 applications from India. A proposed hike in investment limits and recent investor scams has made investors more careful, but the interest has not waned.

Not only in obtaining US green cards but
I have seen physically 2 girls in my social group to literally cry
to get away from India after immigration accepted their applications inside India to another foreign country.
I know many people get approved but not cry and make it self evident the horrific situation inside India which she was concerned for her relatives their as they couldn't GET OUT !
Note : even the Syrian refugee comes to foreign country & says they want to go back as soon as situation improve !

This is the problem. America doesnt need ch@ddi ceo's they have their own people who have built america who can be a CEO.

You've seen america ? ...Thats how you build a country !...unlike some TOILETLESS RAPE CAPITAL.

What would we do with a CEO like dharvi in mumbai ??? ...hahahaha

Thats why when ch@ddi gave jhaphee to trump he did not even bother to oblige and has since cut off all h-1b benefits and even h-4 spousal benefits ....

This is not us but America saying that please for god sake WORK IN INDIA, Become a CEO in INdia and stay there ....lol

America has enough americans who should be becoming CEO's there!

That's a significant increase year over year. Annual Indian per capita income is $1,670 according to data published in 2016 so that mean's for an average Indian citizen it will take almost 300 years to attain the minimum $500,000 for an U.S EB-5 visa. These aren't normal Indian citizens who are leaving. This is a brain drain thanks to Modi's fiscal policies. Indians are very shrewed with their finances and the fact they would rather take a chance in U.S where cost of living is higher and purchasing power parity is astonomical speaks volumes. I suspect if you looked at the whole picture and analyzed the outflow of Indians globally you will observe the same trend.

Compare that to Chinese or South Koreans who almost always go back after completing their studies in the west.

You have nailed it. Jokes aside this shows the level of desperation in India where not only with the H-1 visas in the US but even other countries like the UK, European Blue cards , singapore, australia and new zealand along with saudization to emiratization has also affected indians negatively.

The global remitances have been going down and their is a serious unemployment issue going on in India right now.

The problem is ch@ddi sarkar made tall promises like smart cities, mars publicity stunts which even they themselves could not keep. Tack on to that the demonitization fiasco . The global right wing governments are coming down hard on work visas like h-1s issued to foreigners when their own people are ready to work.

Now after all the fascade of a supah pawah on paper has faded and indians have not landed on any mars the ugly reality of a poor sub-standard toiletless poor country with rapidly increasing unemployment is staring them in the face.

Thats why everyone is asking : ache din kahan hain ??
