“I always wanted to be a cricketer. But my brothers used to tell me to start athletics as it’s an individual game. In 2012, I started taking part in events like discus throw, javelin apart from races at the school. I remember there used to be only two athletes in the school, who would compete at the divisional level,” Arshad told YouTube show Beyond The Throw hosted by Roha Nadeem earlier.

It was coach Rashid Ahmad Saqi who first trained the youngster at the village ground before Arshad participated in various competitions in Punjab. It was only in 2014 that Arshad first travelled to Lahore to compete in the Punjab Youth Festival before a friend told him to appear for the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority trials.

Read this article from 2021:

In 2014, after Nadeem secured first place in a Punjab youth festival, Saqi decided “it was high time to induct him in any government department to raise and polish his talent more.”

“My job is to hunt talent, train athletes and introduce them to government sports departments to further their careers as athletes,” he added. “Therefore, I took him to WAPDA, Lahore, where another senior coach, Fayyaz Bukhari, took him under his supervision and trained him to reach the Tokyo Olympics.”

There are no coaches,no facilities and no system to produced good sports persons.You need to establish sports clubs at the grass roots level.In other countries they have strong sports culture in schools and colleges.They have sports facilities available eg coaches,training grounds gyms,medical staff etc.Sports is tied to economy too.Look at China when it was poor and look at it now.Dollar generals,poor management ,corruption.nepotism and internal fighting in sports destroyed sports.
