Egypt committing state terrorism, al-Sisi and al-Assad are same: Turkish PM

Erdoğan saluted several times the crowd with the 'Rabaa' sign made by raising four fingers, which has become the symbol of the massacre in Egypt and at the Rabaa al-Adawiya Square where the supporters of the ousted President Mohamed Morsi have gathered for weeks. AA photo

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has accused Egypts interim rulers of committing state terrorism and compared army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad as scores more were killed in a crackdown and hundreds were besieged in Cairos al-Fath Mosque by security forces.

The Al-Fath Mosque is under siege. Peoples place of worship is innocent. They have burned, destroyed our mosques in Syria and in Egypt. Either Bashar or Sisi, there is no difference between them. There is no salvation with oppression, Erdoğan said during a defiant speech in the northwestern province of Bursa Aug. 17 where he attended the launching ceremony of an urban renovation project.

Erdoğan also slammed Egyptian officials for describing supporters of toppled President Mohamed Morsi as terrorists.

People are saying we ask for our vote to be honored. But there are those calling them terrorists. But I am saying that state terrorism is currently underway in Egypt, Erdoğan said.

There are currently two paths in Egypt: Those who follow the Pharaoh, and those who follow Moses, he added.

Erdoğan condemned the attacks against worship places, including churches, but said that supporters of Muslim Brotherhood where mostly protecting those places from being vandalized.

He also argued that Turkey could be next for "those who were stirring unrest" in Egypt.

The tension between the countries peaked as Turkey recalled its ambassador in Cairo, sparking a reciprocal move by Egypt. Egypts Ankara envoy, Abdurrahman Selahaddin, had urged Turkey not to side solely with the Muslim Brotherhood and respect all Egyptians.

However, Erdoğan refused to step back from his defiant rhetoric vis--vis the July 3 military takeover, accusing those who have financially helped the coup regime of being accomplices to its actions. He also assured that Ankara was pursuing diplomatic efforts to increase pressure on the interim government that took power following the military coup.

We had wanted the United Nations Security Council to speak with a fair and determined voice. The Organization of the Islamic Conference and the European Union have no face left to look at in the mirror, he said.

Erdoğan said Turkey and Qatar had been the only supporters of the Morsi government, while also thanking the Netherlands and Denmark for their position during the current Egyptian turmoil.

Erdoğan saluted several times the crowd with the 'Rabaa' sign made by raising four fingers, which has become the symbol of the killings in Egypt and at the Rabaa al-Adawiya Square where the supporters of the ousted President Mohamed Morsi have gathered for weeks.

Turkey should focus on not being hurt by earthquakes

Erdoğan also commemorated the 14th anniversary of the 1999 Marmara earthquake that left over 17,000 dead, emphasizing that Turkey had been severely damaged due to its inadequate preparation for earthquakes.

We have heavily paid the price for unpreparedness, a lack of capabilities, a lack of coordination and ineptitude, Erdoğan said, adding that Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate (AFAD) had been founded to help counter all these deficiencies.

Now we have to start thinking about reducing the damage. The target would not be healing the wounds but doing the necessary for not being wounded in the first place, he said, noting urban transformation projects such as the one being launched in Bursa.

He also announced that a total of 87,000 homes would be renewed in 46 provinces.

Analysis: Turkey edging closer to Syria war

Analysis: By taking on the regime of Syria's Bashar al Assad, Turkey threatens to further ignite the regional conflagrations already kindled by the country's destabilizing and widening civil war.

ENLARGEA crowd gathers around the wreckage of a car bomb in the central shopping district of the Turkish town of Reyhanli. Two car bombs killed at least 40 people and wounded more than 100 in Reyhanli on the Syrian border on Saturday. The bombs, which exploded in downtown Reyhanli, including outside the local municipal building, raised fears that Syria's ongoing civil war is spilling over its borders. (Tracey Shelton /GlobalPost)

REYHANLI, Turkey With bombs in its cities, refugees on its borders, and Syrian rebels operating from its soil, Turkey is on the verge of entering into a full-scale conflict with its war-wracked neighbor.

But by taking on the regime of Syrias Bashar al Assad a brutal dictator with Russian backing and a core of staunch supporters inside Syria Turkey threatens to further ignite the regional conflagrations already kindled by the countrys destabilizing and widening civil war.
More aggressive intervention into the Syria conflict in which more than 80,000 people have been killed since 2011, human rights groups and the United Nations say could put Turkey into near-direct conflict with Iran, a regional power and stalwart ally of the Syrian government.
It could also roil Turkey as it negotiates a fragile peace deal with Kurdish fighters now withdrawing to northern Iraq as part of the accords after 30 years fighting the Turkish state. The fighters, who belong to the Turkey-based Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), wield considerable influence on the sizeable Kurdish community inside Syria.
Turkish intervention could threaten the relative self-autonomy Syrian Kurds have forged since the uprising, prompting a backlash against Turkey on both sides of the border.
More from GlobalPost: Kurdish militants begin historic Turkey withdrawal
All of these things risk straining Turkey's economy, accentuating its sectarian and political divisions, and compromising its overall stability," a January report from the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (WINEP) says.
Turkey is also embroiled in the war in broader strategic terms, the report says.
With the border areas serving as a smuggling, logistics and operational hub for Syrias disparate rebel groups, as well as a home for 350,000 refugees, Turkey has indeed long been involved in the conflict that began as a popular uprising in 2011. But it quickly morphed into a full-scale armed civil war.
In what was the first major incident of tension between the two sides, Syria shot down a Turkish reconnaissance jet off the Syrian coast but that Turkey maintained was in international airspace in June 2012. Turkey then called for an emergency session of NATOs North Atlantic Council, the defense alliance to which it belongs, but no military action was taken.
In February, a car bomb exploded at the Turkey-Syria border crossing at Bab al Hawa, killing 14 and that Turkey blamed on the Assad government. Mostly errant artillery shells from Syria have also landed in Turkey numerous times.
In a deadly attack earlier this month, at least two car bombs exploded in the Turkish border town of Reyhanli, in Hatay province, killing 56.
More from GlobalPost: (PHOTOS): Deadly explosions strike Turkish border town of Reyhanli
Authorities here said a Turkish, pro-Assad Marxist group was responsible for the attack, which left entire blocks of shops and homes in ruins.
Distraught locals looked on from behind police lines in disbelief, as rescue teams searched through smoldering buildings sand overturned cars for survivors.
But Turkeys options for retaliation or even intervention remain limited, particularly without the political and perhaps military backing of the Obama administration.
While Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Barack Obama agree that Assad should go, they appear to disagree on how vigorously that goal should be pursued.
Erdogan has long called for the establishment of a no-fly zone to halt air attacks on rebel-held areas inside Syria. Obama reportedly requested plans for a no-fly zone from the Pentagon, the Daily Beast reported Tuesday.
But largely, the administration has been reluctant to commit US troops or air support to yet another bloody conflict in the Middle East.
The United States stepped up its "nonlethal" support for the Syrian opposition, including body armor and night vision goggles. But the rise of extremists, including some linked to Al Qaeda, within rebel ranks is worrying policymakers in Washington and Turkey cant guarantee that weapons it gives to the opposition wont end up in the hands of PKK militants.
I believe the government will reduce their support [of the Syrian opposition] in the aftermath of the Reyhanli bombings, Turkish political analyst and author, Kenan Camurcu, told GlobalPost.
Indeed, perhaps the biggest challenge to Turkey intervening in Syria will come from within.
In a survey released earlier this month by Pew Research Center, a public opinion group, 65 percent of Turkish citizens oppose Turkey supplying arm to the rebels, and more than half were concerned the violence would spill over into Turkey.
More from GlobalPost: Turkish military fired back after Syrian shell lands in its Hatay province
The Turkish demonstrators mounting ongoing protests against the fresh violence say Syrias rebels are directly involved in the attacks they say will drag Turkey into the war on the opposition side.
Others simply blame the presence of anti-Assad fighters inside Turkey for provoking regime-sponsored attacks.
The Reyhanli attack happened to create chaos in Turkey, to carry the war over here, and to spark the hatred between the same races that are fighting in Syria, activist and protest organizer Ferit Diker said at a protest in Samandag, Turkey last week.
The other protestors chanted anti-government slogans, and carried signs criticizing Erdogans rulng Justice and Development Party (AKP). The day will come, AKP, when you will have to account for our actions, read one placard.
But Turkey is already suffering the effects of their limited involvement in Syria, including an economic strain.
In November, exports from Hatay to Syria had fallen to less than half their 2010 level, according to WINEP. Turkey had exported iron, steel and crude oil to its Arab neighbor. But now, key exports mostly via smuggled routes are food supplies, cement and an illegal weapons trade.
In addition, the refugee crisis is costing the Turkish state roughly $40 million each month, according to figures announced by Turkish deputy prime minister, Ali Babacan, in January.
There is no magic formula for dealing with an extraordinarily violent and difficult situation like Syrias, Obama said at his joint press conference with Erdogan at the White House on May 16.

5 reasons Turkey is unlikely to go to war with Syria

Lack of U.S. support and Kurdish peace process among factors, say experts

hi-turkey-pm-852-2863964.jpg
The ongoing conflict in neighbouring Syria has tested the leadership of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is in Washington, D.C., on Thursday to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama. (Burhan Ozbilici/AP)

While Syria's civil war is increasingly bleeding over into neighbouring Turkey, including a bombing in a border town this past weekend, most Middle East watchers say it's unlikely that Turkey will strike back militarily.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington on Thursday, where he is expected to exert pressure on his American counterpart to commit to a greater military role in war-racked Syria.
Turkey, which shares an 822-kilometre-long border with Syria, has been among the most strident critics of the regime of Bashar al-Assad. The conflict between the Syrian government and rebel forces has dragged on for over two years and killed at least 70,000 people, according to UN and other estimates.
Earlier this week, Turkish security services arrested nine individuals in connection with the bombings in the Turkish border town of Reyhanli this past weekend, which killed 46 people.

The Turkish government says these individuals have connections to Syrian intelligence. Syria has denied any involvement.
Turkey has increasingly felt the heat of the Syrian crisis, but experts say that factors like the ongoing peace talks with Kurdish rebels and the prospect of a showdown with Iran make it unlikely that Turkey will go to war.
"Turkey wants to play a bigger role in Syria, but I don't think it will go to a military intervention," says Noomane Raboudi, a professor of Arab and Islamic studies at the University of Ottawa.
Here are some of the reasons why.
1) There's little support for it in Turkey

The Syrian civil war has spilled over into Turkey on a number of occasions — in addition to the recent bombings in Reyhanli, there was a car bomb at a Turkish border crossing in February that killed 14; and last June Syria shot down a Turkish reconnaissance jet off the Syrian coast.
However, despite these seeming acts of aggression, there has been little appetite among average Turks for an incursion into Syria, says Amir Hassanpour, a retired professor of Mideast affairs at the University of Toronto.
si-300-syria-ras-al-ain-rtr3ab29.jpg

The main reason for this, he says, is that Turks are tired of bloodshed. Not only has Turkey recently come through a three-decade civil war of its own with Kurdish rebels, which claimed 40,000 lives, it has also witnessed at close hand the bloody, chaotic outcomes of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
"Public opinion doesn't really like Turkish involvement in wars in the region," says Hassanpour.
2) The Turkish leadership has domestic demands

The other factor here is that Prime Minister Erdogan is preoccupied with two equally pressing domestic issues -- forging a peace agreement with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) and reaching consensus on a new constitution -- observes Reva Bhalla, vice-president of global analysis for the Texas-based consultancy Stratfor.
Turkey's 30-year battle with Kurdish rebels, which are located largely in the southeastern party of the country bordering Iraq, came to an end in March when jailed PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan announced a truce.
Since then, the Turkish government has been working to solidify the peace, and part of that is enshrining rights for Kurds in a new constitution.
"This is a very sensitive political time for the ruling party, as Erdogan is trying to cobble together a whole series of constitutional revisions and at the same time negotiate a comprehensive peace deal with the PKK — and those two issues are intertwined," says Bhalla.
3) Military intervention could threaten a PKK peace deal

The PKK has links to Kurdish populations not only in Turkey, but in northern Iraq and northern Syria, areas where Turkish forces and Kurdish rebels have clashed repeatedly in the last three decades.
While Turkey still classifies the PKK as a terrorist organization, the government is allowing PKK members, under the current peace negotiations, to withdraw from Turkey to return to northern Iraq.
Bhalla says that if Turkey were to jump into the fray in Syria, it would likely galvanize Kurdish fighters living in northern Syria, and could unravel the delicate peace that the two sides have managed to achieve in recent months.
4) Confrontation with Iran

"When you talk about Syria, you are also talking automatically about Iran," says Raboudi.
ii-syria-damascus-rtr3asb1.jpg

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, right, meets Iran's Parliament speaker Ali Larijani in Damascus in November 2012 in this handout photograph released by SANA, Syria's national news agency. (Reuters/SANA)
Iran and Syria have enjoyed a long-standing friendship, not least because they both aim to counteract the influence of the U.S. and Israel in the region.
Throughout the current crisis, the Iranian leadership has supported Syria's embattled Assad politically as well as militarily (often transporting arms through Iraqi airspace).
The Sunni-led government of Turkey has had reasonably good relations with the Shia theocracy of Iran.
But if Turkey were to intervene in Syria, Raboudi says it's possible that it could spur Iran, one of the region's biggest powers, to become more actively involved — and turn an already messy sectarian battle into an even bloodier conflagration.
5) The Americans are reluctant to fight

While Turkey has an estimable army, Bhalla says the country would only act militarily if the U.S. took the lead and provided the majority of weaponry and tactical support.
"Turkey is not going to intervene militarily in Syria on a meaningful scale without the United States playing that primary role," says Bhalla.

Despite strong criticism of the Assad regime, the Obama administration has been reluctant to commit to any kind of military force in Syria. One reason is that U.S. intervention could ignite a war with Iran, says Hassanpour. Plus, there's the unhappy legacy of recent U.S. wars in the region, which weighs heavily on the American public.
"The United States cannot engage in another war — it has already lost the wars in Afghanistan and in Iraq," says Hassanpour.

Turkish military fired back after Syrian shell lands in its Hatay province

Turkey's military has returned fire after a mortar from Syria landed in its territory, according to news reports.

Turkey and Syria traded fire today for the fourth straight day as Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces fought with rebels near the Turkish border, reported the Associated Press.

Syrian Defense Minister General Fahd Jassem al-Freij meanwhile promised to crush the uprising and put an end to months of violence, while the embattled President Assad made a rare television appearance to commemorate the victims of the 1973 war with Israel, according to AP.
Today's cross-border violence began in the border town of Guvecci, where one resident said: “Artillery shells and mortar rounds are landing around 20 metres from the Turkish border. They are even firing at vehicles and are wounding people here.”
Local Turkish officials said troops later fired across the border again after a different border village was hit by a shell today, according to AP. There were no casualties, and local officials told AP it could have come from the rebels and hit the town by mistake.
The violence comes after Syrian shelling killed five Turkish civilians — two women and three children , and another shell was fired into Turkey , raising the specter of a wider regional conflict.
Despite previous provocation — Syria in June shot down a Turkish fighter jet, killing the two crewmen — this was the first time Ankara had taken military action across the border since the Syrian uprising began in March 2011, the BBC noted.
Turkey, a NATO member, has reserved the right to respond to continued shelling, and Turkey's parliament voted on Thursday to allow cross-border military operations in Syria.
Further, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Friday warned Damascus not to test Turkey's "limits and determination," the Associated Press reported.
While Ankara has said Turkey doesn't want war, Erdogan has said the country would not shy away from armed conflict.
The Jerusalem Post cited Erdogan as warning Syria that testing Turkey would be a "fatal mistake."
The Syrian mortar fired Saturday landed near the village of Guvecci in Hatay province, the BBC reported, citing Turkey's Anadolu Agency.
Turkish troops responded immediately.
However, Damascus said the mortar strayed into Turkish territory accidentally.
No one was killed or wounded in the shelling.

its amazing situation in middle east.. turkey and saudi arabia are both against syrian govt.

earlier saudi arabia also had very good relations with mursi govt. but after the coup saudi arabia sided with egyptian army.

note that earlier in syria there were four camps fighting against each other..

1st camp:-

syrian govt
hizbullaah

a large number of pro-syria armed groups and tribes

backed by

iran,
russia,
and surprisingly usa backed iraqi govt.

it is said that venezuela, north korea and china are also giving some support to bashar al assad

2nd camp

free syrian army
national coalition for revolutionary and opposition forces
syrian national council
local coordination committees of syria

backed by

saudi arabia,
turkey,
usa
nato
mursi govt
qatar

3rd camp(salafi mujahidin)

syrian islamic front
Jabhat al-Nusrah
Islamic state of iraq and syria
ghurabaa ash shaam
backed by

Alqaedah

4th camp

Kurdish democratic union party
kurdish supreme committee
kurdish national council
popular protection units

and now after egyptian coup, there is likely to have some more division..

although all upper forces are enemies of each other but the most of the war till now has been between pro syrian govt and anti syrian govt.
