Corrupt beggars have always ruined the economy and institutions and they are doing it again.

Dr Umar Saif, the founder of several startups and one of the country's top innovator, said that we should learn some lessons from the closure of the q-commerce startup, which raised $110 million in funding.

In his Facebook post, he said that there are a few lessons that we can earn from its closure:

  • Don’t follow global fads. Pakistan has over 900,000 grocery stores, virtually one at the corner of every street. A handful of dark stores (warehouses) are not going to change the way people buy grocery.
  • Venture capital (VC) money is not a substitute for a strong business model. Airlift’s gross revenue in 2021 was over $33 million. Net margin? Less than $800,000. That’s a net margin of less than 2.5%. A grocery corner store makes at least 10 times of this margin. Subtract overheads etc and you are looking at a company selling grocery of over Rs6 Billion in a year while posting a substantial loss!
  • Gross merchandise value numbers don’t mean anything. $33 million above might sound like a big number — and apparently it was for the VCs — but remember that grocery retail is over $54 billion annually in Pakistan.
  • Startups need to be run by founders, not VCs. Any startup in which founders are diluted to less than 10% equity after just two rounds of funding is looking at a team that’s simply not incentivised enough to go the extra mile. Dear VCs, please stop doing this.

Kia chawalein maar rahe ho bhai? What does the government have to do with a private startup?

Economy is a variable thing, sometimes the obvious and sure benefit can actually be more catastrophic. So eliminating a subsidy might sometime seem like an obvious win win for the government because they would see it as saving some money, but on the other hand they might lose more revenue due to less production by businesses who either would close down or minimize their production, due to not being able to run operations.

So sudden rise in dollar and also petrol prices made it difficult for many businesses to continue business as usual, which is why we heard about textiles losing around $1 billion in exports, made in Pakistan mobiles closing operation and now this one.

You are right, but subsidies on petroleum products are not sustainable. So there is no choice but to scrap subsidies. Right?

The answer can't be a straight "Yes/No", because as I said above economy is a fragile thing and you have to calculate everything carefully and when you do it then who knows if you come up with an end result where providing a 100 billion subsidy for a period of time might be less damaging(or more beneficial) than saving those 100 billion but losing more as a whole in terms of other loses.

So you are termed as incompetent if you don't calculate well. Making a technical analysis is what makes an experienced economist distinguishable from a lame person. A lame person would straight away go for the obvious benefit but an experienced/technical person would go for the passive/bigger benefit.

You are also termed as incompetent if you don't take timely decisions and instead of doing alternative arrangements you just go for the obvious benefit, like for example if Russian oil, gas, and wheat was really an option but you didn't take that option due to saving your own interests then you were also not the right person for the job.
