Bajrangi Bhaijaan
This movie has completely conquered the box office in Pakistan. I could not get tickets for regular shows so I had to watch this movie in a special show scheduled for 2:45 AM and it was jam packed. (And there are screenings as early as 5:30 AM)
This movie is the talk of the town. Bajrangi Bhaijan has scooped 38 crores in its first week in Karachi and Islamabad alone whereas in its first week in India it made 184.62 crores creating box office history. And in 7 days it grossed 352.82 crores worldwide.
The script, the music, the cinematography, the performances and the entire production is simply superb.
This movie has proved that art has no boundaries. It has also proved that the human connection transcends all other identities- religion, caste, creed, nationalities all become meaningless when the human being inside us awakens.
And there are some very emotional scenes- when an Indian Hindu rescues a Pakistani Muslim girl from a brothel house and when they reunite crossing the zero line.
This mass entertainer has touched the hearts and minds of millions on both sides of the Radcliffe line. And it is achieving cult status in India and Pakistan. Not only that it gives the message of love, mutual respect, peace and humanity, it also exposes the negative role of media and establishment in promoting hatred and undermining any peace efforts. But even here as it shows unscrupulous elements within the media and intelligence, it also portrays the conscientious within these establishments.
This movie promotes the narrative of peace. And the fact remains that more than 95% people of both India and Pakistan want peace and friendly relations. It is just the 5% remaining who do not want both the countries to progress on this count. And these 5% people are very powerful. But the fact is that these people are fast losing ground. One, they are going against the spirit of the time and second, they are wrong! So they will never be able to retain status quo.
Above all the 95% people of both the countries have given their verdict which is “We are for peace and brotherhood. The thumping success of Bajrani Bhaijan is testimony to what the people want. Tears streaming down everybody’s cheeks in the cinema hall was valid proof that the movie has not only conveyed its message it has also modified attitudes.
I salute Kabir Khan, Salman Khan, Harshaali Malhotra and Nawazuddin Siddiqui acting as Chand Nawab.
Chand Nawab who had one blooper video to his credit is an international hero today- courtesy the tremendous power of social media (and of course his character in the film.) It also proves the effectiveness of internet to promote peace and harmony we social activists must capitalize upon.
Shahida pulling the barbed wire at the climax symbolizes the sentiments of 1.5 billion people of the sub-continent who are for breaking the barriers. And they are for peace and love regardless of who they are and where they belong! And Shahida who remained silent throughout the film finally broke her silence conveying to 1/5th of humanity to speak up for peace and brotherhood.
Everybody must watch this film not only for the cinematic experience but also for the sublime message it conveys!
