ISLAMABAD: Pakistan cricket team captain Younis Khan resigned at the meeting of the National Assemblys standing committee for sports here today.

He tendered his resignation amid heated discussion at the meeting after chairman standing committee Jamshed Dasti alleged the national team for match fixing.

However, chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ijaz Butt, who was also present at the meeting returned the resignation to Younis but the captain submitted it again to him after coming out of the Parliament House.

Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board Ijaz Butt, captain Younis Khan and coach Intikhab Alam appeared at the meeting on invitation from Jamshed Dasti for probing into Pakistan teams defeat in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy held recently in South Africa.

It is going to be so ridiculous to criticise team for champion trophy performance. They played semi final. That should be appreciated. There is no doubt that they lost to a weaker opposition but it can happen at any day in sports. If you know even aaaa baaa about sports you will accept the fact that creepy things happen in the field. But you need a heart and some brain to accept the fact that the factor of loss exists in the field.
Pakistan cricket after going through so much for last few years was just getting stable because of Younis leadership. The same younis who was hailed the greatest leader, the hero, the healer of nation in pain, after t-20 is now asked to step down. What is wrong with this nation. There is no doubt about his current form but you can not replace him as a leader with any one in the current team. What can younis do if you have horrible batting line up who barely can manage 200 on live pitches. Fix your stupid domestic system and let the guys play on bouncy wickets. What if Ponting was the captan of this side. What would he have done with Malik and Misbah in your line up?
Suppose you bring afridi as a captan. What will he do? Shit nothing. All these people who are standing for Afridi Will be whining after your comming series losses in New Zealand and Australia. Which you are going to lose because of pathetic batting ( I know they will win in dubia and they are going to dance on the streets and afridi is going to be their new hero but wait until you go to new zeland and aus)
Stupidity on extreme. Stupidity on sale.
People ! Stop thinking with your....... Use some brain.

Younis offers to quit as captain

The reactions to Pakistan's defeat against New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy upset Younis Khan AFP

Pakistan cricket's perennially fragile peace and progress was shattered once again with Younis Khan offering to resign from the captaincy following days of increasing rumour and speculation surrounding Pakistan's exit from the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa. The board has yet to take a decision on the matter, leaving it effectively in limbo.

Pakistan's semi-final loss, and Younis' crucial drop catch off Grant Elliott, was the subject of a particularly incendiary report by an Indian newspaper in which it was hinted that there lay more to the loss than what met the eye. The ICC immediately cracked down on the report and though it was retracted the next day, it snowballed in Pakistan in the following days, culminating in today's meeting of the National Assembly's standing committee on sports in Islamabad.

The meeting was called for by the head of the committee, MNA Jamshed Dasti, who claimed Pakistan's loss was the result of match-fixing, before he took back the allegations. At the meeting Younis, already prepared with a letter of resignation, publicly made the offer to stand down, incensed at increasing media reports casting doubt on his and the team's integrity. The PCB turned it down in the meeting - and the committee told them to tackle the matter privately - but after the meeting Younis again, briefly, discussed the topic with Ijaz Butt, chairman PCB, and also in attendance.

But the PCB refused to confirm whether they had accepted the resignation, or to clarify what the current situation was. "Younis did offer to resign during the National Assembly meeting," Ijaz Butt told Cricinfo. "The match-fixing allegations and Pakistan's loss was being discussed and this was stated by Younis. It was said in a public forum so we have to think this over and I have to discuss it with him separately. I have to discuss it further and will not comment any further now."

The move also comes amid growing murmurs over the role of Shahid Afridi in the matter. Afridi personally met Butt a few days ago in Lahore; on the agenda, it has been rumoured, was the topic of the ODI leadership, though Afridi denied it. PCB officials also later quashed the speculation, saying that the meeting was not out of the ordinary. Sources close to Younis are keen to blame Afridi's angling for the post, though Afridi has publicly and regularly backed his captain. Further complicating matters was the uncertainty of Younis' availability for Pakistan's next assignment, an ODI and Twenty20 series in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, against New Zealand; Younis has still not fully recovered from the fractured finger that hampered him through the Champions Trophy.

Younis, of course, has a history with captaincy. He once stepped down from his role as stand-in captain, days before the 2006 Champions Trophy, because he was unhappy with the board administration over a number of seemingly trivial issues. Once the administration changed, however, he took up the role again. A few months later, after the 2007 World Cup and Inzamam-ul-Haq's resignation, he turned down the captaincy claiming later that the environment and circumstances at the time were not right for him to take it up. He only took over as full-time captain in February this year, after Shoaib Malik was pushed aside.

All of it leaves Pakistan, after a recent commendable upturn in fortunes, once again in a confused mess. This year, which has seen international cricket taken away from the country for the foreseeable future, has also seen the side win the World Twenty20 in England in June and reach the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy, as well as unearth some exciting new batting and bowling talent. Younis' captaincy and his sides have also been admired globally for their performances, though that message seems not to have reached Pakistan, where talk post Champions Trophy remained centred on the match-fixing allegations.

I totally agree with what Younis did, there is no way he should be questioned by a stupid politician who can't even understand ABCD of cricket. Younis is doing exactly what a captain should have done.

i think the entire pakistany team should rally behind him and strike if they have too...hell the whole cricketing system in pakistan should stand behind yk!!

we could even see a revolution in pakistany politics through the revolt of cricketers!!! nothing can galvenise the public like cricket can!!!

I have strongly disagreed with a lot of decision YK has made as captain --- but it was totally pathetic on NA's part to call him and question like that. These pathetic politician -- what do they do themselves. Are they accountable to anybody?

It is freaking sport. You win some, you loose some. You can't call team management after every loss and ridicule them in the world media.

YK is right, if the captain is treated like this after every loss, then nobody will want ot be a captain.

What would this Gashti guy would have done, if he was a member of parliament in Zimbabwe or Bangladesh?

It would have been a great gesture by the other players had they also appeared at the meeting and supported Younis. When they win the, they all come together to collect the checks. But when they lose, it's the captain who has to face these morons. Players like MoYo, Afridi, Gul, Malik, etc should have been there.

I support YK and stand behind him.

younis khan has done absolutely right decision.
these political robbers have no right to humilliate the national heroes.younis should not stop here only with resign .i think he should go to court against so called chairman os standing commitee bqz who gave him right to misbehave with players with out any evidence.everybody know that pakistani team played well in this tournament and tried to give hundred percent.
I think all team who participated in this champions trophy should resign with younis khan untill accountability of so called jamshed dasti who is not looking serving for country but helping the indian media,s conspiracy. once again its too painful as a pakistan cricket fan.

what do these politicians want??? they cant do their job... and they dont want other people to do theirs as well....

this is outrageous...
