From Abdul Mohi Shah

JOHANNESBURG: Umpires Simon Taufel (Australia) and Ian Gould (England) said sorry to Umar Akmal after their sub-standard and biased umpiring in the Champions Trophy semifinal lead to Pakistans unexpected defeat against New Zealand on Saturday.

A source in the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed to The News that heated arguments were exchanged between Pakistan coach Inrtikhab Alam and the umpires during a hearing conducted after the semifinal at Wanderers. Match referee Javagal Srinath called up Umar and Intikhab for a hearing after the match, over what umpires blamed the batsman for showing dissent over the lbw decision. Taufel ruled Umar lbw at a time when he had played the ball on to his pads. Umars fall at a crucial stage robbed Pakistan of a chance to post a big total.

The Pakistan camp defended Umar and was very critical of the umpiring standard during the match. Srinath repeated the slides in front of field umpires and later conducted a separate hearing with the umpires.

According to the sources, the match referee later cleared Umar of showing any dissent and conveyed that the umpire who had made the decision said sorry to Umar for the wrong judgment.

That was not the only biased decision by the umpires who faltered on no less than four occasions to help New Zealand make it to the final. Grant Elliott, who went on to play a match-winning knock was let off twice during his stay at the wicket. Shahid Afridi almost got him when he was new at the crease. Rana Naveed had him plumb on a full toss when again he was ruled not out. Even Daniel Vettori got a lucky break off Saeed Ajmal.

The worst of all that the two field umpires were so strict on Pakistan bowlers that they ruled most of short pitched deliveries as wide ball and at the same time extended full luxury to New Zealand bowlers to hurl such deliveries.

The general impression here is that since the ICC is being fully controlled by the Indian lobby, they were not happy with the Pakistan approach during their match against Australia.

Some of the Indians believe that Pakistan had deliberately kept India out of the semis race as they did not go all out to achieve win against Australia that could have enabled them make it to the semis. The Indians didnt want Pakistan to win the Trophy and that whole biased umpiring decision were very much part of that campaign.

For the ICC, the Indian market is a money-making machine and they believe that cricket has got much attraction and following because of the sponsors they get from that country.

I WATCHED EVERY BALL OF THE MATCH AND I WAS ALMOST CRYING. THE ABOVE HIGHLIGHTED STATEMENT IS SO TRUE. I SPENT REST OF MY DAY INVESTIGATING IAN GOULD. HE IS ALMOST A NEW ZEALANDER. SHAME ON IAN GOULD FOR BEING A RACIST. SIMON TAUFEL HAS ALWAYS BEEN FAIR BUT HE GAVE U AKMAL OUT WRONGFULLY WHICH COST US BIG TIME.

Well, ICC says neutral impiers, how can Simon Toefel can be neutral when his country was waiting for winner of this match and he knew how Australia had won the match against Pakistan. Although they would claim that this was only one bad decision but everyone who has played cricket a bit would understand that it only takes one bad decision at crucial time to change the outcome of the match not to mention that there were quite a few.It was a complete let off by Pakistan as even though Pakistanis did not give their 100% in the match and even then Australian side looked club level team against Pakistan. To add more to this, refree was an indian, one impire was australian and other had roots in Newzealand and rest can be find out by answering the complicated question of 2+2. If they want to win like this then good for them, we know who the true champion is, don't we?

The International Cricket Council on Monday described as "incorrect" media reports about Australian umpire Simon Taufel apologising to Pakistan batsman Umar Akmal for wrongly giving him out during their Champions Trophy semifinal match against New Zealand.

"This report is incorrect. It has no truth," an ICC spokesman said.

The ICC's denial came after a media report quoted sources in the Pakistan team as saying that Taufel has apologised to Akmal after footage replays confirmed that the Australian erred in ruling him in the crucial encounter in Johannesburg.

According to Pakistan team sources, coach Intikhab Alam had a heated argument with umpires -- Taufel and Ian Gould at the hearing, called by match referee Javagal Srinath after the on-field officials reported that Akmal had shown dissent on being given out.

Taufel's apology came after the footage of the match made it clear that Akmal played the Daniel Vettori delivery with his bat, but was given out LBW.

IAN GOULD
THIS UMPIRE IS SO CALLED FROM ENGLAND. HE HAS SPENT A LOT OF HIS LIFE IN AUKLAND. I THINK HE HAS INCLINATION TOWARDS NEW ZEALAND.
JUST WATCH HIS FACE EXPRESSIONS IN SEMI FINAL AND FINAL OF THIS TOURNAMENT. AGAINT PAKISTAN, WHEN ELLIOT WAS PLAYING SHOTS, THIS GUY WAS SO HAPPY THAT HE COULD NOT HIDE HIS HAPPINESS. IN FINAL, WHEN AUS WAS BEATING NZ, THIS GUY WAS LIKE HIS MOTHER DIED.
