Imam Hussains (AS) uprising was certainly a great one, with unlimited impact and without divergent objectives. It was not confined purely to taking power, though political power was of extreme importance in the view of Imam Hussain (AS), for positively changing the social conditions and reforming the community. His mission had several short term and long term objectives. He viewed political power as his father Imam Ali (AS) did:
O Allah! You know that what we have done wasnt a contest to take power, or aimed at seeking to possess the remnants of worldly trivia. We wanted, indeed, to restore the lost aspects of Your faith and revive Your laws that were being ignored, so that the oppressed may feel secure. (Tohaf ul Oqul an Ale war-Rasul)

Imam Hussain (AS) had the following aims in mind when he started his uprising:
1. Changing the political conditions, the ruling system and the way of administering civil affairs, and treating the Umma (Muslim community) in accordance with the Divine standards set forth by Islam.
2. Awakening the political conscience of the Umma and making a powerful overseeing body out of it, lest the ruler deviates or neglects Islamic laws (Shariah).
3. Emphasizing the legality of militarily opposition to the unjust ruler
4. Re-educating the Umma in line with Islamic laws.
5. Rectifying deviation and putting into practice the Shariah.
6. Breaking down the wall of fear and terror that was imposed on the Umma and stirring the spirit of revolution and sacrifice within in it.

As soon as Imam Hussain (AS) stood against the regime, he was sure that his movement would not succeed militarily, but that it would be the starting point of a large-scale opposition. Accordingly, explosions and upheavals commenced and the regime reached the edge of collapse. The government swayed and lost the last threads connecting it to the Umma (Society).. It then resorted to oppression and terror as a means of silencing any opposing voice and suppressing liberties. The Umma began to feel the weight of having abandoned Imam Hussain (AS) to the hands of the oppressors. A series of armed uprisings sprouted, weakening the Umayyads and ending in the fall of that regime. Thus Imam Hussain (AS)s holy blood was the key element for the downfall of Umayyads regime.
Imam Hussain (AS) confronted a regime that threatened to destroy Islam and the Islamic aspect of the Muslim Umma. When Yazid succeeded his father, Muawiya who was known as the Command of the Faithful by the tribes and provinces, his throne was not secure until he received the homage of the four most notable personalities of Islam, whom Muawiya, in spite of his utmost efforts, could neither buy nor coerce to recognize his heir apparent. Without their recognition Yazids authority couldnt be firmly established. They were as follows:
1. Abdullah bin Al-Zubayr
2. Abdullah bin Umar
3. Abdulrahman ibn Abi Bakr
4. Hussain bin Ali
These were the sons of the most prominent companions of the Holy Prophet (SAW).

Of course, Imam Hussain (AS), being the grandson of the Holy Prophet (SAW), enjoyed greater esteem than the other three.
It was this insistence on the recognition and this demand for allegiance (bayat) on the part of Yazids government, and the flat refusal of Imam Hussain (AS) to give allegiance to Yazid that finally led to Imam Hussain (AS)s martyrdom and that of his 72 loyal companions and the captivity of the women and children of his household.
It is an undeniable fact that at no time in history, before or after the Karbala tragedy, do we find a group of more than 100 men, women, and children so strongly united in purpose and determination. There wasnt the slightest disagreement among them regarding their ultimate goal and the necessity of self-sacrifice. We know that on several occasions, Imam Hussain (AS) addressed his enemies and advised them to reconsider their decision to kill him, but never, did he speak to his companions for the purpose of raising their spirit of loyalty and courage. Neither in Medina nor Mecca, nor during his journey towards Kufa, did he ever try to add to the number of his supporters. On the contrary, he repeated his advice to them to leave him and save themselves. But despite this, not a single person left him to join the enemy, while some left the enemys ranks to join him and chose to be martyred along with him. There were no signs of weakness or regret on the part of his companions throughout this tough trial. On the contrary, they were all happy and in good spirits at the prospect of the precious opportunity to be martyred with their Imam (AS).

The tragedy of Imam Hussain (AS)s martyrdom sent a wave of resentment throughout the Muslim lands against Yazids oppressive regime. The tragedy of Karbala opened the eyes of the masses and awakened the public mind. The martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and the great courage and outspoken criticism of the captives, particularly Hazrat Zainab (SA) (Imams sister), shook the masses out of their submission to oppression and tyranny.
Imam Hussain (AS), his family and his companions set a sublime example of human resistance against oppression and injustice for the Muslim Umma and all other mankind. Up to the present day, one hears with a mixture of wonder, sorrow, and admiration of the tales of indomitable courage, generous self-sacrifice and unlimited patience in severe hardships for the attainment of a sacred goal. Imam Hussain (AS) not only saved Islam from deviation, distortion and corruption by the forces of apostasy and oppression, but he also revived the institution of martyrdom in a world of cowardly men who were willing to bear even the utmost disgrace and indignity for their fear of death and love of the life in this world. His words echoing through the long distance of centuries.

Imam Hussain (AS)s martyrdom gave rise to a series of popular insurrections, which decades later, ultimately resulted in the collapse of the Umayyad dynasty. He deprived the caliphate of its dangerous aura of undeserved sanctity that threatened to obliterate the Divine faith by degenerating into a hereditary monarchy.
The message of Karbala has preserved its power in spite of the passage of 1,000 years. The endurance of its message is characteristic of all the things connected with mans Divinity and sublime human goals. If the following Quranic Verses have motivated the future generations and aroused our generation, it is because of the sacrifices of the martyrs of Karbala whose blood saved the purity of the Divine Message. The Holy Quran thus says:
Certainly We sent Our apostles with clear arguments, and sent down with them The Book and The balance that men may conduct themselves with equity. (57:25)
And what reason have you that you should not fight in the way of Allah and of the weak among the men and the women and children, of those who say: Our Lord! cause us to go forth from this town, whose people are oppressors, and give us from Thee a guardian and give us from Thee a helper. (4:75)

Thus, Imam Hussain (AS) remains forever a slogan for the revolutionaries, a lighthouse for freedom, and a source for struggle and liberation.

While we all respect Imam Hussein.(AS)..your assumptions are wrong here. It was not Imam Hussein's (AS) martyrdom which ignited the fall of the Ummayad empire. becasue the Empire lived on for another 70 years...that is about 3 more generations. So try not to get lost.

I wonder sometime that in this world generally and particularly among Muslim world, is Hussainyat remains or Yazidayiat remains. If the lesson from
Karbala Tragedy is that:

a) whenever a Ruler is of those traits which have been allegedly attributed to Yazid, then the uprising should and must start.
The conditions prevailing, the number of people with somone, the armaments etc do not matter. If that is the principle then,
I am sorry to say that not a 0.5% Husainyaat is available in this world. Can someone give me one example in this contemporary
world where this principle is being applied.

b) The irony is that in Arabic Culture and also in all Muslim countries, the level of tolerance to opposition and specially the
opposition to Throne is non-existent. This was clearly manifested by this Tragedy and the way the whole incident was
dealt by Yazid and his army.

c) It is really unfair that people or particular people have termed this tragedy as "religious one", whereas any impartial study
of events, even by taking into account the first post of dukeoflondon manifests that it was all "Politics". The ways and
the form of seeing it, may be different of both parties involved (for Yazid it was a rebellion to his rule and for Hussain(rzt)
it may be something else like "right & wrong"). But it was a scuffle for throne and politics or to get rule. Definitely it
was not a war for the shake of or for "religion"(meaning that both parties were believers);

d) No one can deny that Iraqis betrayed Hussain(rzt) and pulled rugs beneath his feet. He was trapped by their
false commitments to stand by him against Yazid, but Yazid as a politicuian/ruler played his card/strength.

e) To all my fairness, I hold Yazid and his army responsible for crossing all the limits. The things should have
been settled in Karbala (then and there). Taking the family of Prophet(pbuh) to Syria as "prisoners" is
something which cannot be swallowed and cannot be forgotten. For me personally, that is even worst
than the tragedy itself. Till the end of this universe, the question-mark will be: why child daughter of
Hussain(as) is buried in Syria and why his sister is outside of Damascus, why still in Ummayad Mosque
in Damascus there haunts that court scene.

f) The Ummat has been divided for ever and perhaps only a miracle will unite it. That is the price!

Bro!! I dont doubt ur love or respect towards Imam Hussain(as)... but I do not agree with ur assumption as well... Yup u r ryt tht the Ummayad clan survived for another 70 years bt what were u expecting, if it wud have fallen the very next day of Karbala than u wud admit tht revolution took place?....(and since when did 70 years ws equal to 3 generations) every revolution takes time bro... n jst like anyother revolution this movement also took time to strengthen... one must also keep in mind the aftermath of the war... when the family tht was imprisoned was released after a year and returned to madina n they started telling ppl about the event of Karbala more n more anger toward the regime grew... in Madina Abbasis started revolting, in Macca Ibn Zbair, in Iran Mukhtar, so yes the government did managed to survive bt civil war did started duue to this event... n this is what was taken in to account by the thread creator n i think u ignored all the factors... u make it sound as if any of it had no importance whatsoever

Definitely it
was not a war for the shake of or for "religion"(meaning that both parties were believers);

d) No one can deny that Iraqis betrayed Hussain(rzt) and pulled rugs beneath his feet.

Salam bro!! first of all in todays world whether Islamic or non Islamic both the characters i.e. Hussainyat n Yazeediat still lives... n what Imam Hussain did is that he laid down an example for us.... tht if u know u r ryt and u believe in what ever cause u r standing for.. dont worry about the force of opposition u have to face... Karbala is a point of test... Allah doesn't gives fazilat to anyone until it takes test and whoever remains firm he gets the rewards... Hussain(as) drew a clear line b/w him (Hussainiat) n Yazid(Yazidiat) it was not b/w two ppl bt b/w two characters.... u r however ryt that the tragedy that haunts us today is tht the message that v shud have taken from the event - the message is lost.... nowadays only a few remains to say Labaik on Imam's isteghasa... bt tht is the way the world is not much ppl are inclined towards HAQ or the right path... in Sura-e-ASR Allah clearly states that AL-ASRE INAL INSAANA LAFI KHUSRIN... in Humans most of them vl bear loss... there are other aayats as well indicating that there are only few who can walk through the hard path of truth and rightfulness... so 0.5% or 0.0005% (the percentage) is not a question here, the general message to stand before evil, stand up for the rights of oppressed is still there somewhere.... u and i and everyone shuud ask ourselves are v Hussaini in tht sense if the answer is no than its our problem v shud not point finger at anyone but ourselves, as if today v r not Hussaini than I am sure that if v were born 1400 years ago then too v wuud have been in YAZID's army...

Regarding your point B i dont know how much uu r aware of ARAB history majority of wars tht took place were for throne n may b thts the reason tht no historian (i m talking about akabireens) has ever named his history TAREEKH-e-ISLAM or HISTORY of ISLAM.... as there is nothing but wars and most of them not for ISLAM but for GOVERNMENT.... u can find Tareekh-e-Tabri, Tareekh-e-Kamil, AlBidaya WalNihaya, Tabqaat-ibn-Saad, Tareekh Ibn-Khaldoon, Tareekh Ibn Ishaq etc etc but not Tareekh-e-Islam... even they were ashamed to name it Tareekh-e-Islam... so i dont know what u meant exctly by this message, if i replied unaccordingly plz do let me know...

Regarding your point C & D..... an impartial study shows u tht it ws political than i dont know what have u studied about KARBALA, plz do enlighten me so i can increase my knowledge!! Who told u tht religion is seperate from politics? if u r taking in account politics tht exists today than this was not HUSSAIN's obective... Islamic politics revolves around the idea of AMR BIL MAROOF WA NAHI ANIL MUNKIR n this was HUSSAIN's goal...so whats wrong of taking it religiously?? isnt our religion all about supporting whats right and denying whats wrong? i m sorry but its look like u know nothing, y was it a rebillion for YAZID? have u read the conversations b/w Ibn Ziyad, Yazeed, Hussain(as) etc or anything about KARBALA before speaking? he was not depending on IRAQIS or the ppl of KUFA... he was a experienced soldier he fought SIFFIN n JAMAL alongwith his father... he saw what happened n how KUFFI ditched him and his brother n he got the news of Muslims bin Aqeels martyr 2 or 3 days prior to arrival in KOOFA he could have turned back... or if he wanted to start a revolt of throne he would have stayed in MADINA where he had a strong hold... or 'politically' the best thing wud have been to give Bayaat to Yazid like IBN-e-UMAR did... y was YAZID after HUSSAIN after all...

Regarding point E---- thanks atleast u r tht fair!!

Regarding point F---- who told u tht the Ummat divided bcoz of KARBALA!! plz enlighten me on this too!

@NewtOn,
You have yourself, in a way, accepted that the element of "Politics" is involved in this incident. Although you still wish to
maintain that "politics cannot be separated from Religion", before you proceed further, please do confirm that
according to you how much this incident was involving religion. My impartial view is that it was all politics. It was
a struggle by both parties to grab power. I can discuss with you, to your heart content, this incident. Please make choice of your
preferred history book, make it on line reference, and we can pick up the "common factors" from that.
Unfortunately, the incident has been hijacked by Poets, Zakir, Alims and who have not spared
any opportunity to flvaour it with more misery and sympathies-win approach. I do admit that if I myself
start listening the Zakir (i can name many), the way they present is heart-moving, but it is their
art away from the reality.

I feel some difference in the urdu translation and Arabic.(specially Islamic Sarhad, what was that, the whole of Islamic
territory was under the Ruler) Can you please give its on line reference. thanks.

You joined late. The earlier threads have been closed by Mode. The division started with "Camel War", further
through "Safin" and its climax was after Karbala.

Thousands or millions of books have been written on this. From where I may start. Let us leave Religion also for a moment aside. Brother Politics is politics
in essence it had always remained the same 1400 years ago or still. Only the complimentary things change with the passage of time. Let us start from this
Medina has been all along the Seat of the Government. Why it was changed to Koofa and then by other party to Damascus. The answer is very simple
it was politics. I said and say that Imam Hussain(as), left Madina, went to Mecca and then at the invitation of Iraqis towards Koofa. The objective
was to topple Yazid who by hook or by crook became the Ruler. No history book deny that unless you give me another source. I will be more
than happy to go through it.

@NewtOn,
There is really a dilemma for both Shias and Sunnis. No one denies that this "incident" happened". but
everyone tries to keep the element of "islam", religion, or "Haq & Baatil" elements into it. Because without
this the whole concept will collapse. The strife for political control did not end at the conclusion of "Karbala",
rather it started with much more force. All the coming years witnessed even bigger bloodhsed among
muslims. There is only one common factor in all that scenario that "THRONE OF DAMASCUS" was
the main bone of contention. Even Mukhtar Saqfee went to the extent of using the card of
remaining members of "royal family" to achieve his political ambitions. Now whole of Ummat
is in the grip of this problem.
