State Minister for Climate Change, Zartaj Gul, has announced a ban on the use of plastic bags in Islamabad from August 14, 2019.

Gul made this announcement on Monday while addressing a ceremony in the federal capital.

“Plastic bags will be banned in Islamabad from August 14”, she said.

The state minister, while praising Prime Minister Imran Khan, said that he is a visionary man whose focus is to minimize the effects of climate change in the country.

She said the Billion Tree Tsunami was one of the many initiatives he took for the purpose.

Zartaj Gul said that Pakistan is ranked 7th in the list of countries affected by natural disasters, and the country needs to be more cautious towards the environment.

Last month, the minister had informed the National Assembly that the government was intending to slap a ban on plastic bags in the federal capital.

She told that the ministry has distributed cotton bags among its officials, the parliamentarians, and the media personnel as an alternative to plastic bags. As much as 5000 cotton bags have been produced for distribution among the federal government employees.

Zartaj Gul added that these bags will also be distributed free of cost in Jummah and Itwaar bazaars along with other markets. The ministry is also planning to launch an awareness campaign on the hazards of single-use plastics.

Banning is no solution.

Do what they did in UK and make charging for carrier bags compulsory.

a couple years ago all carrier bags were free but then all retailers were made to charge 5p for a carrier bag. This made a huge difference, people who buy one or two items to carry only to their car choose not to pay the extra 5p and just carry the items in hand. I myself avoid buying a bag if I just go to buy just milk or a loaf of bread.

A lot of people started bringing reusable bags from home with them.

5p is a very small amount but it made a huge difference. Its more of a psychological effect, if you paid for something you will not readily throw it away in the bin, but store it and try to reuse it next time. And if you can do without something then just dont buy it irrespective of how cheap it may be.

This way you are making an option available and if anyone needs a bag they can buy it, but if its not really necessary people will avoid even spending this small amount.

Put taxes on carrier bag manufacturers, this would make it expensive and make the shop keepers charge 3 or 5 ruppees per bag.

This would solve the problem without creating all this fuss.

Why just Islamabad? Islamabad is just 0,5% of the country. Does it mean PTI governmetn writ is limited to just 0,5% of the country? It reminds me when PTI government banned non helmet wearers from buying petrol....what happened to that? khoton ki hakumat with ZERO credibility

PLASTIC BAGS MANUFACTURES SHOULD START MAKING CLOTH BAGS ---- OLD FASHIONED BUT PLANET FRIENDLY

And this could lead to more business for the Pakistani cloth/textiles industry which is good. The cooked food sellers will need some alternative packaging though since most use the plastic bags.
