Pakistan teen to land tomorrow for treatment
MUMBAI: Thanks to donations from Mumbaikars, Pakistani teenager Saba Ahmed will land in Mumbai on Monday afternoon to undergo treatment for a rare genetic condition called Wilson's Disease.
An article in the August 16 edition of the TOI had highlighted an online crowdfunding campaign called 'Save Saba' that aims to collect Rs 10 lakh for Saba's treatment. At the end of the first week, it generated Rs 2.2 lakh of financial support for Saba, who will board a morning flight from Karachi on Monday.
"Saba is scheduled to get admitted to Jaslok Hospital on Monday," confirmed liver specialist Dr Aabha Nagral, who had treated Saba in April as well. The disease is characterized by accumulation of copper in the body, disrupting the nervous system as well as other organs. Saba left Mumbai after the initial treatment in May, but her condition has been deteriorating rapidly, her mother Nazia had told TOI.
The Bluebells Community, an NGO that had reached out to Nazia and Saba in April and raised over Rs 7 lakh, has once again taken up the task of raising Rs 10 lakh for the teenager's three-month stay. "We had asked Saba to travel to Mumbai as soon as we collect Rs 2 lakh, which would be needed for the initial hospital admission," said Shabia Walia of The Bluebsells Community, adding that she had received enquiries from people who want to give cheques to fund Saba's treatment. Those wanting to help Saba, can do so at http://bitgi.co/savesaba.
