Islamabad police arrested 2,836 beggars, NA told
ISLAMABAD: Interior and Narcotics Control Minister for State Baleeghur Rehman on Friday informed the National Assembly that the Islamabad police had arrested 2,836 beggars until November 2013.
In a written reply, the minister said that out of the 2,836 beggars, 484 had been sent to the Edhi Homes, 70 underage beggars had been sent to the Child Centre, Islamabad and 2,282 had been produced before the courts.
Baleeghur Rehman said the capital police had been taking steps to eliminate beggary at traffic signals, chowks and other areas of the capital.
The minister said two anti-beggary squads had been established to apprehend beggars loitering in different areas of Islamabad.
He said that out of the two squads, one was functional in the Saddar Zone, whereas, the other in the Industrial Area Zone.
The patrolling system within the capital had been revamped, wherein 15 Falcon Squads and 16 Eagle Squads along with six commandoes had been deployed to work in three shifts for surveillance and to control beggary, he said.
Rehman said the SHOs of all the police stations within Islamabad had been directed to utilise their police mobiles as well as staff from the Rescue-15 to curb the menace.
The minister said instructions had been given to all checkpoints to keep an eye on professionals beggars who bring small children for beggary in Islamabad.
He said the capital had been divided in 44 units and experienced officers had been deputed at each unit to curb beggary.
To eliminate beggary in the capital, the minister said, a monthly security duty programme was being prepared.
He said a total of 59 checkpoints had been established in the capital which were working round the clock.
He said as part of the drive random checking at all entry points of the capital was also being carried out.
The minister said a control room had also been established at the Rescue-15 under the supervision of a gazetted officer and the progress regarding the performance of checkpoints was being monitored on a daily basis.
He said, to control beggary in the city, the zone SP and supervisory duty magistrates had been directly supervising the campaign against this social evil. app
