Infected Australian sheep unloaded in Karachi

KARACHI: Australian sheep infected with scabby mouth disease have made their way into the metropolis.

Approximately 75,000 sheep departed from Australia on board the Fremantle-based Wellard Rural Exports ship Ocean Drover. Their destination was countries in the Middle East. 53,000 sheep were offloaded in Qatar and Oman, while the remaining 22,000 were to be transported to Bahrain.

However when the Ocean Drover arrived in Bahrain on August 29 it was asked to leave its berth until matters were resolved. It was here that concerns were raised in regards to the sheep being infected with scabby mouth disease.

The ship remained in the waters of Bahrain for 14 days and the sheep were not allowed to be unloaded. According to standard rules, the ship should have returned to Australia, however its next destination was a city which was not even part of its original route.

The Ocean Drover docked in Port Qasim, Karachi on Tuesday night. The 22,000 sheep were offloaded and handed over to an unknown buyer.
This scandal was covered by international newspapers however Pakistani authorities failed to take any action.

Media Statement on Australian Sheep Shipment

Facts should be pointed out about the Australian sheep shipment to GCC, including Qatar, which passed out among the media lately. These facts are to provide correct information and for the sake of transparency. These facts are:
A ship full of sheep reached Doha coming from Australia via Muscat on 17[SUP]th[/SUP] August 2012 heading to several GCC countries. The ship first unloaded part of the shipment in Oman on the 15[SUP]th[/SUP] of August 2012. The authority concerned in Oman had examined the sheep and released them, because no cases of disease were reported. When the ship reached Doha port, veterinarians at the quarantine section of the Livestock Department of the Ministry of Environment tested samples of the sheep and ensured that all animals are healthy. There was no symptom of infectious or epidemic disease on the sheep. Based on this medical report, the shipment was cleared temporary and the sheep shifted to the stocks of Mawashi.
The sheep were retested at the quarantine section and they were found safe. Some 88 sheep died during unloading due to high temperature, humidity and stampede while transferring. This is negligible and not even 1% of the total imported sheep of 46,000. It is quite natural for such huge consignment.
Later, the livestock Department received a letter from Bahrain authorities concerned saying that Australian sheep shipped with the Qatari consignment were found infected with Pustular stomatitis.
The team of veterinary doctors visited quarantine section and retested the sheep and ensured that all animals are healthy and safe for consumption.
The Director of Livestock Department personally visited the department to follow up and make sure of the health status of the consignment. He was accompanied by veterinary quarantine expert and veterinary labs expert on Friday 31[SUP]st[/SUP] August 2012, where the members of the committee passed by all livestock of Mawashi and monitored the health status of the Australian shipment. They found that all animals are in good health, and that the death percentage of this consignment was much less than in previous years.
Coordination had been made between Livestock Department and other concerned authorities in the country, such as meet hygiene of Doha Municipality, that health examinations should be tighten on sheep before and after slaughter. Also, the department should be daily reported of the health status of the consignment. Coordination had also been made with the Food Commission of the Supreme Health Council on this issue.
The Pustular stomatitis is a viral disease in sheep, caused by a virus similar to smallpox that belongs to a group of DNA viruses. This disease infects sheep and goats and has many names, such as Orf disease or contagious eczema. Although this disease spreads rapidly, it does not cause death for large animals and the percentage of death among small animals is only 1-2%. The infected animals are often completely cured, they also gain immunity of the same disease for a period of up to three years. This disease has not been included in the list of diseases that must be reported to World Organization for Animal Health, because it is not serious on animals nor human health.
The virus is week and does not bear high temperature. It dies at 55 C[SUP]o[/SUP] for half an hour, and at 64 C[SUP]o[/SUP] for two minutes.
The infection transmits to sheep from contaminated fields. The main source of infection are the ulcers and crusts on the skin of the infected animal. Small sheep, that have not been infected or did not gain immunity, get infected from previous infection.
Incubation period ( the time elapsed between infection, and when symptoms and signs are first apparent) is 2-3 days.
Symptoms begin with the appearance of pits turn to blisters and then to dark crusts after 11 days. They remain up to 1-2 weeks then disappear completely, after that the infected animal gets cured.
Blisters appear only in the mouth, gum, lips, and nose. In rare cases blisters appear in the nipples, legs’ hair roots, and hooves.
As the cause is a virus, there is no specific treatment for the infected sheep. The symptoms often disappear with time. But it is advisable to use disinfectants and antiseptic on the skin to smooth and treat ulcers, and also to protect the animal from secondary bacterial infection.
The contagious Pustular stomatitis in sheep is from animal origin. In rare cases it may infect human in a simple form, as in small water bubbles and blisters on fingers. Vulnerable people are those who handle infected animals directly on daily basis, such as shepherds, butchers, workers, and vets.
It was noticed that sheep and goats immunized with vaccine do not get infected by Pustular stomatitis. There is a vaccine for the prevention of this disease. It is advised to use vaccine on animals one month before exporting. The immunization is done by scalping underarm, or on the soles of the tail of the animal.
Infected farms should be continuously cleaned, crusts and pathological wastes must be burnt, feet and hooves must be cleaned using copper sulfate solution in infected farms.

Unfortunaitly, this is true. I heard this news in Australian Local news. But sadly no body in Pakistan care about this?

Not denying it is true dost, the days did not add up was all I pointed out,

Having done a little research, I hope someone has the good sense to isolate these animals, because this sounds like a nasty disease.

Also the TS is right to question where the Pak authorities are in all this, The so called importer or buyer should be answering few serious questions

I agree with you that we consume a load of Sh*t not knowing/ignoring in our daily lives in the shape of everyday consumables. However what I don't agree with is to and I quote "take it easy its routine work here ". I will have a rant about it all and atleast spread this like wildfire around my circle of influence, what about you?

The last thing I want to see is these animals being lined up for sale at our maweshi mandi for Eid-ul-Adha sacrifice.

Biological warfare

Bacteriological or biological agents of warfare are living organisms (or infective material derived from them) which are intended to cause disease or death in animals, plants, or man, and which depend for their effects on their ability to multiply in the person, animal or plant attacked. Various living organisms ANTHRAX MOST COMMON DENGUE FEVER
Biological warfare technology was advanced in the Second World War by a unit of Japanese scientists working in occupied Manchuria using Allied prisoners for experimentation. Those responsible were exempted from prosecution as war criminals in return for handing over the results of their work to the USA. In 1945-72, the USA Chemical Corps, with the participation of biologists from US universities under contract, conducted research at several places in the USA
There is no admitted military experience of the use of biological agents in warfare. However, it is reported that during the 1980s, the Soviet Union used rudimentary genetic engineering to create incurable strains of Back Death (bubonic plague). This was loaded into missile warheads aimed at the USA (but never fired)
2. Those possessing or seeking to acquire a biological warfare capability include Israel, Russia, USA, North Korea, Vietnam, Laos and possibly Taiwan
A teaspoon of anthrax bacteria efficiently dispersed could do as much damage as tons of nerve gas - of which one drop absorbed through the skin can kill
The course of an epidemic is not generally predictable and it would not be possible for a military commander to control its spread.
WAKE UP B4 it get too late.
