Singer Adnan Sami Khan has been heavily fined by India for buying properties in Mumbai when he was a Pakistani national.
Reportedly, Adnan Sami has been fined INR 50 lakhs by FEMA’s appellate tribunal.
According to FEMA, Adnan Sami has been fined for purchasing eight flats in Mumbai in 2003. The singer had bought the properties when he was a Pakistani national and has done so without the permission of the Reserve Bank of India.
The Tribunal has also enhanced the penalty amount from ₹20 lakh to ₹50 lakh. Adnan Sami has to pay the amount within three months of the order.
Earlier, his properties were seized by The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and a penalty of INR20 lakh was imposed.
Adnan Sami had claimed that when he bought the properties he was unaware that Pakistani nationals could not purchase immovable property in India.
The tribunal noted that the flats had been purchased by Indian rupees from monies earned in India on which income tax had been paid. It noted that the loans had also been duly paid.
Adnan Sami has recently been under fire for his anti-Pakistan and anti-army stance on Twitter. The singer had also backed India when the two nuclear-armed neighbors almost went to war in February of this year, after Pakistan shot down two IAF jets for intruding into its airspace and captured an Indian pilot.
