[h=1]FIA, IB sent reports against MQM to UK: Altaf[/h]
20 August, 2011
ISLAMABAD: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain said on Friday that the country's civilian intelligence agencies, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and Intelligence Bureau (IB), had sent reports against the MQM to the British government.
He made this complaint while talking to President Asif Ali Zardari over phone. However, the president denied it and assured him that an inquiry would be made on the complaint of Altaf Hussain.
President Asif Ali Zardari formed a committee comprising Sindh governor, chief minister and home minister to oversee the law order situation in Karachi and keep the presidency informed about the latest situation.
The situation in Karachi was discussed at a meeting of President Zardari with the top political leadership of Sindh at the presidency. During the meeting, President Zardari also called Altaf Hussain in London and emphasized the need for working together to fight the lawlessness. He said elements behind the recent spurt of violence were those who wanted to drive a wedge between the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and MQM.
Reciprocating the sentiments, Altaf Hussain said ending the violence in Karachi was critical for peace and stability and that the MQM supported any move that was aimed at restoring peace to the city.
President Zardari once again invited Altaf Hussain to join the government and said that the gesture would send a powerful signal to deter the crime mafia and gangsters. Briefing the media, Presidential Spokesman Farhatullah Babar said the governor and chief minister briefed the meeting on the latest situation with particular reference to the surge in the incidents of violence and targeted killings.
The meeting decided that the Sindh government would approach the government of Balochistan for working out arrangements to allow pursuit by the Sindh Police of gangsters, and criminals fleeing from Karachi, besides stepping up surveillance of the routes leading to Karachi to keep an eye on criminal elements and illegal movement of weapons.
The spokesman said the meeting also decided to beef up intelligence network in Karachi to provide real time information to the police to apprehend culprits planning criminal activities.
Babar said the president directed that all victims of violence be compensated immediately. Fateha was also offered for those who had lost their lives in recent violence. No criminal would be spared regardless of political affiliation, if any, the meeting reiterated.
The meeting was attended by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Religious Affairs Minister Syed Khursheed Shah, Secretary General to the President Salman Faruqui, Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Hussain Wasan, Sindh Minister for Local Government Agha Siraj Durrani, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon, Sindh Law Minister Muhammad Ayaz Soomro, Sindh Agriculture Minister Syed Ali Nawaz Shah, MNA Abdul Qadir Patel, and Farhatullah Babar.
Fasahat Mohiuddin adds: President Zardari said if the PPP and the MQM did not mount a united effort against terrorism and extremists, bloodthirsty terrorists would 'burn down our houses'.
Talking to the president, Altaf Hussain said the MQM remained in the government in all sincerity, and it supported the government in difficult times. "Certain elements in the government are not only supporting hardened criminals and savage killers, but also getting themselves photographed with them," he said, adding this act had emboldened terrorists and killers.
He said the government could find out as to who were involved in extortion and incidents of kidnappings for ransom by contacting the business community of Karachi. He said the government should take indiscriminating action against criminal elements, and ferocious murderers and take blessings of the helpless people.
